NICHOLSON58 I have a manual portable that came with the boat. I've not yet examined it. It is in a vacuum sealed pouch intended for the ditch bag. I agree it will be good to have off shore as part of the life raft & ditch equipment. We won't be near salt water though for 3 - 5 years. (Lake Michigan). Manual is the way to go if its only for emergency.

Katadyn Survivor 35 (Military Version)

Hi, all

Has anyone picked up a Katadyn Survivor 35 to have as an emergency watermaker on board?

I know these are $2,000 new, and require yearly treatment of the membrane. However, I also see used "military units" listed for $350 to $500 on ebay (some that have been treated, some not). There's also indications that Katadyn might refurb used units for $350.

I know the 40e has the 12 volt option, but hard plumbing something into a smaller boat that may never be used seems like overkill. Also, the portable could be used on a life raft.
