|sailguy40||I am another one guilty of jumping in the pool and hoping I can swim I am going to take it slowly as I have planned all along anyway. I don't care if I sit out there barely moving with only a main, I will get the hang of it eventually. Then I can try out a genoa see how it handles. I will say, if that winds picks up too much and I am afraid my boat will be overpowered the sails are coming down and that motor will be cranked up. Reason I say this, I had watched many scary videos on youtube sailing in high winds and with my skill levels I don't want ANY part of that. Maybe later but not now. So although I do say I jump in the pool and hope I swim, it will be on calmer days. I don't care about speed, I want to relax and enjoy a nice day. With my good book, online videos and of course this forum, I should be able to learn some stuff. Plus many guys out at the marina who race and been sailing a long time said they will help me out and come out on my boat with me. I do plan on taking some courses unless its starts coming pretty natural as it did when I was flight training.|

Sail-Net rendezvous? What's that? Where? When?
And, since I'm on a roll for asking questions, what is "Rep power" over there on the right side of this window?

I guess I must be asleep at the wheel sometimes as I did not see the direction ahead of time some of this thread was going...and here I thought it was about the advantage of formal vs informal learning when learning to sail.
Bubble you like many of us have come aboard SN to increase your knowledge and skills with sailing. When this forum no longer meets those goals with you then it is time to move on to something more aligned with your goals.
I have met some very nice people in this forum....learned some great tips...shared some of my experiences....and yes even laughed a few times.
I have once and will a second time host the Sail-Net rendezvous at our club as I have met some fellow comrades on the Chesapeake and hope to meet more. (last time Jeff H, t37chef, Eryka, Sapperwhite, Craigtoo and others came and they were nice normal people) Hopefully this time I get to meet more. I want to meet some of our New England members when we travel up to Long Island every summer. I hope to someday to meet Saildog, Bermudahigh, Sabreman, Josrulz, JOhnR Pollard, Midlifesailor, t37Solare, SV Auspicious, Pdqaltair, JMcCreery, Chuckles, Lapworth, Culinary 411, Bene505, Sounderbounder,Bloodhunter, and Wwilson.
I also have met some total assholes here . People who are know it alls,,,degrading,,. self important and let you know it all the time. I even think there are a few members who are obviously frustrated by their life situations either at home or work and use this forum to bully and degrade others with their opinions because the are not the "boss" of anything else in their life and feel they can be here.
When this Forum becomes filled with more people from the second group...then it is time to move on. If you have the threshold to ignore the assholes...then stay. You cant change others....just your own situations.
I have this rule...never let other people problems or deficiencies affect my choices,,,and never get in a pissing contest with a skunk.

If he can take the flack from a bunch of chuckleheads that kept telling him that he was full of it when he talked about being out in the exact same conditions of the southern straits race, you can take handle some dudes telling you to be cautious.|

|CharlieCobra||I used to catch flak for the way and conditions I'd sail Oh Joy in. Even amongst the spew there are nuggets of gold to be picked out and examined or saved. Don't sweat it, go sailing, come and tell us about it. Even the naysayers will say something useful most times. Whatever ya do, don't take anything up here personally cause it ain't. Opinions are like..., you know the rest...|

I gotta say that I agree with Faster. Don't toss SN out with the dirty babies. The cool thing about this place is that you do get a pretty good balance of advice.
I don't want EVERYONE telling me to go for it. I'd get killed in 5 minutes!
