I'd highly recommend you get some certifications, like the STCW 95, CPR, First Aid, etc... as these will make you more desirable as a crew person. In fact, they may be required for some of the commercial ship positions.

Looking to acquire deckand position for summer
Hello, I am trying to get a job as a deckhand from June to late August preferrably. I am a 18 yr old, male college student in the U.S. looking to satisfy my sense of adventure and love of the sea. I am fairly strong, very hard working and enthusiastic to learn a great deal about boating. I do not have much prior experience, but am a quick learner. I am open to working on pretty much any sort of vessel, but a yacht or cruiseliner is preffered. If anyone out there is interested in hiring me for the summer or knows someone who might be PLEASE shoot me a message. Thank you!
