Outboard motor controls

My 26'' Cape Dory uses an outboard in an engine well, the same arrangement as is found on the Cape Dory 25. Well appreciating the benefits of using an outboard, handling the outboard while docking is a real pain. I seem to be always looking down and back to find the controls on the motor, and this is just when I need to be looking up and forward. I understand that there are ways to place controls for an outboard forward so that one can stand and control the boat (gear shift lever, accelerator, engine cut switch are the things that concern me) while looking ahead. I wonder if anyone on the list knows of sources for this sort of information. Any ideas will be appreciated. As usual, thanks to all those who make this site so helpful.
