Re: Keel winch woes. Is this one good?

You can get the cable from Blue Water Yachts, sames as the keel bolt and washers.

Did you have to remove the keel to do this? I have a V17, and I'd like to replace the keel winch with the one you purchased (I actually live less than a mile from the Northern Tool and Equipment world headquarters). The only issue is, I'd like to do this without removing the boat from my trailer, as I intend for this to be a first step in troubleshooting other issues. If it doesn't work, I'm planning on getting someone to lift the boat onto a drydock so I can inspect the keel, but I'd rather not do this unless absolutely necessary...

Do you know if this is possible?

Re: Keel winch woes. Is this one good?

I believe I had to reload it. I don't remember if I used the cable from my first winch or if I bought new. Early on in my sailboat ownership experience I bought a swaging tool from Lowe's and it has proved valuable. If I made new I would have swaged a thimble onto the end that bolts to the keel. The end that stays on the winch connects like they all seem to --

If your cable is still good you shouldn't have any trouble reusing it. (But inspect it carefully!)

Right, I guess I could have phrased that better. Does the winch come with the cable pre-loaded on it already? or did you have to buy that separately?

The Dutton-Laison brake winch.

What is your winch cable set up?

800# is plenty. I think 800 lbs is close to the displacement of the entire boat. The "ballast" spec is much less. And at no point (unless the keel bolt breaks) is the winch supporting the entire weight. I'm no weight lifter, and its not hard for me to crank.

Glad to hear it! And the 800 pound capacity is enough? Also what type of winch cable did you use?

The Dutton Laison brake winch is still working great. Quality American made product. I ordered it from Northern Tool. Probably used a coupon code.

It is an ideal setup. Crank up, crank down. No silly ratchets and no freewheeling.

The only issue with the worm winch is the price. If the 57 dollar one works the is a three hundred dollar one necessary?
