Droid user here.

I don't want to download every app to find the best ones for inland lakes and rivers.

Thanks,

Navionics would be my suggestion for the way to go, especially for inland lakes and rivers -- I think they take rank as having the highest number of mapped lakes and rivers (18000+, I've read). Plus, with their SonarCharts new bodies of water are added constantly from community data. Definitely check out their app -- you should be able to get a one week trials before you commit to purchasing.

I don't think InavX can be used with Active Captain. For me, I prefer clean charts when navigating, so the less overlay the better...but again, that's just MHO.

SeaIQ is great for NOAA charts and has AIS built in. It also allows you to overlay AC and many other third party apps.

The bulk of my "navigation" is mainly avoiding the rocks, reefs and stuff of the East end of LI Sound, FI Sound, Narragansett Bay, etc. I like a clean chart. If it's dark or foggy and I really need AIS, I have a VHF with AIS receiver.
If I was doing more passage making in open water the overlay would be great.

I still prefer InavX for simple backup navigation on my phone or tablet.

Trip planning or looking for marinas, etc. I use Navionics or Active Captain.

I still use the app for my Galaxy S6, also used it on my iPhone 4S, and 5, and galaxy 4 and Note 5, prior to that I used it on my Droid 2, and Droid Razr MAXX. Its a great app for either iOS or Android.

There are 2 versions of the app now, the Navionics, or Boats "US Boats" and Navionics HD "US Boats HD." I think the difference is $10 for the regular $50 yearly for the HD, with the HD being tailored to higher resolution screens like the 2k S6 I have, but also tablets.

Other applications are available for sure... but I've not felt compelled to dig into them, as the Navionics app has everything you might need in a backup application for navigating inland waters (there is no replacement for a real chartplotter, or gulp, REAL charts!). Just a note though, not all inland lakes are mapped on it. Some smaller lakes are not available. Example, my local lake, Lake Wallenpaupack has very detailed maps, it's a 13 mile man made lake, but our other smaller lake Lake Nockamixon (6 miles long) does not have any depth/contour maps at all.

squidd.io has a way to share your position with friends and family on facebook through an iphone and android. You can even use a sat-phone to send a geo-tagged sms when you are out of cell coverage. It has a follow list that you can invite your friends to and see everyone's position.

Your post nudged me to consider bringing my old, outdated iThing (which still has a functioning GPS & WiFi) as a backup on our next trip. Thx for that suggestion.

Tide Graph is a nice app, but really limited in its Canadian tidal stations. Perhaps you know of something better? If someone figures out how to put the Canadian Current Atlas on an App, they will make some $.

Yes, isn't the KoolAid so sweet! (getting sleepy.....)
