Re: Why are there so many Hunter haters?

Modern adhesive sealant goo's are so effective that they can hold the deck on by themselves with only a few screws to locate things until the goo sets. Cars are largely held together with them these days - especially aluminium ones. Goo is the only thing holding your windshield in and they are structural components in modern cars.

That said, multihulls have a lot more torsional flex than monos so a pure bonded deck joint would seem less of a good idea on them.

As to keels falling off, every story I have read/heard about that has been a Euro boat - that huge "ultra high quality" Oyster being the latest.

I've never heard of a keel being knocked off a Hunter, let alone falling off.

If someone said something like that to me I'd ask for details & evidence. I'm sure it was a friend of someone's cousin who knew all about it.

robert sailor To be fair with the poster commenting on screws and adhesive hull to deck joints that is in fact the way the current Ben/Jen boats are built and maybe Hunter has gone this direction although I don't know for sure. I can tell you I much prefer the older methods of toe rail thru bolted with adhesive between the hull and deck. It came to light over on CF when an owner of a fairly new Lagoon posted pictures of his hull deck joint separating right next to the chainplate. The factory fix was to add more adhesive and thru bolt the joint, which was probably the best idea from the beginning. The poster added that several of their mono hulls(Ben/Jen) had reported similar situations. The Lagoon that had problems with the hull to deck joint said his boat had been fine until he crossed an ocean and that extra working of the structure had caused the failure. Seemed it wasn't a single incident as other owners reported having had the same failure.

It appears you have no idea what you're talking about. But don't stop. It's fun to watch the flames.
Yep. I took a look at mine, and it's exactly as shown there. 1982 Hunter 36 (Cherubini). My boat probably spent a lot of time in the slip before we bought it. So far, we've cruised over 7200 miles since November, 2012, and live aboard full time.

This sure is an old thread, but the haters are still out there today.

Re: Why are there so many Hunter haters?

My buddy has an old Bristol 34, but he learned to sail basically on my Hunter 410 and prefers to sail on it with me over his boat. The other day he was talking to someone in the marina that has a bimini/dodger material supply company and they were talking about boats he has been on. So my buddy tells them he has his Bristol 34 and that sometimes he sails with me on my Hunter, at which point they interrupt him and start telling him what crappy boats Hunters are. Of course my buddy is now a little pissed because he likes my boat and feels it is a lot better built than his.

Just an example of how Hunter bashing seems to be a sport to some.

Re: Why are there so many Hunter haters?

I had some Guy at our dock last weekend tell me he wouldn't own a Hunter because the keels fall off. We love our little Hunter like I loved my Legend 375, but given a choice I would prefer a backstay and get rid of the swept back spreaders. We have had no issues but I hate the thought of the main rubbing on the spreaders which it does often. As for trimming, I haven't had any trouble shaping the main to what I want using the various controls present other than wishing I could let it out farther DDW.

No hate would be better which is why I didn't hate the uninformed slob who suggested that the keel was likely to fall off my boat.

To be honest - if it looks like a troll, sounds like a troll, it's probably a troll.

The guy obviously has no real experience with the boats he says he does. Then rattles off a bunch of blabber about his dubious sailing experience.

It has the sound of a tantrum written by a 12 year old.

Don't take the bait.

Re: Why are there so many Hunter haters?

Let's try to appreciate this guy...

As a jist... Many low/high end auto dealers or salesmen DRIVE the product they sell and may even own them to promote them... that's just good business practice.

Second most boat dealers should generate enough income to own the very boats they are selling because how else would you advertise the greatness of the product?

So here we have a former salesman of Hunter products for a time and all he has to show for it is a used 76 Morgan as I have read on his posts not a very good one at that but was a project boat? Nothing against that as many here have project boats but they aren't bad mouthing other brands or down right being rude!

The way it looks to me is you got fired or laid off from Hunter Marine as either a lousy salesman and you have a bone to pick here against a product you used to sell and now from some unforeseen trouble at Hunter you come here bashing Hunter products... take your pick.

Now you call many of us morons? Speaks volumes about who you are!

The amount of ignorance and BS on most of these forums really is quite astounding...
I could go on with my resume...if you haven't been offshore an appreciable amount of time, if you haven't slept aboard outside of a marina an appreciable amount of time, if you haven't worked in or hung around a boat yard for a year or 2
or lots of other boat stuff....well you get the idea.....you don't know much..i'm SURE ALL THE faCTS I've LISTED DONT ACCOUNT FOR MUCH....bash on so knowledge ones....b.....
Lets see if I have this straight - you have a lot of experience with other boats and you read something about Hunters screwing the decks on a Cherubini model.

So now you know more about Hunters than their owners do.

Oh, by the way, excluding the CSY's, back in the day all those boats had similar trash talk directed at them as Hunters currently do - particularly those Morgans. To hear it back then, merely stepping aboard an OI 41 was life threatening.
