deniseO30 rick you might want to give Rudy a call at D & R marine.com he is the expert word on Odays. ck out the site but call him for sure. as he don't answer Emails.

It sounds as though you need to slide the engine forward and up the companion way? easy with a crane I'm sure

dickybrewer5 Denise 030, I will try to upload 2 or 3 pics next time I have a little time off work. The motor is centered under the cockpit floor, directly under the binnacle/helm. The binnacle/wheel is bolted to the floor, but the motor can't come through that way. Thanks for replying, I'm still researching when I have time. I'm sure I'll figure it out somehow, but hearing suggestions or from someone who has done is very helpful thanks, Rick

dickybrewer5 Wheelhouse, I searched the cockpit and surrounding areas and there are no fasteners, the cockpit floor would have to be cut out and rebuilt. I understand what you are saying about diesels, but since this motor is blown, if I pull it out piece by piece and it turns out to be rebuildable it seems like I could just reinstall the block, then the head, etc..... I think O'Day must have had a plan for motor replacement and I have all the original manuals, but there is no mention of any way to remove/replace the motor. Still hoping someone can tell me since it's not in the manual. Thanks for the reply, Happy Sailing, Rick

QuickMick oh, the o'day they just did this on was a 28' dunno how big yours is, but that would certainly be a consideration

QuickMick my marina just bought and sold a similar boat and hauled out the engine for a rebuild. if you are still thinking about this, i will ask them what that entailed for you (heck, ill ask em now)... he said the hardest thing was unhooking it from the tranny--he ended up cutting the bolts--but was able to remove it via companionway in one piece after unhooking everything. you do need something to yank it with, as you wont be able to carry it, lol. they had it on the hard and pulled it with a crane.

that being said, i might consider the above mentioned self-rebuild as i have the gas version and she is one tough mother....

Just a word of warning. This is probably Schooner Bay Marina. I had a lot of trouble getting my core charge back after buying an engine from them. Took 6 months and a complaint to the BBB. They basically stonewalled the BBB like they were doing to me but finally sent a check. And his "warranty" I would consider worthless based on my dealings with them. Luckily the "remanufactured" engine seemed to be fine. Tread carefully.

Rick,
That piece-by-piece approach is not gonna work too well. One of the aspects of diesel engines is that they work off of higher pressures than gas, and require close tolerances and specialized tools to achieve them.

I too would be reluctant to cut thru the hull or deck, but some quick research suggests that at least some center cockpit boats are built with a removable the deck. It would not be uncommon to have to disassemble/remove all the boat furniture or steering or something else prior to hauling the engine.

dickybrewer5 Denise 030, Yes, it is a diesel, most were gas I think but mine is definitely a diesel. Actually, Westerbeake now sells the replacement motors, I called the dealer in Portland and they wanted over $11,000 for a new one! I have been surprised to find that these replacement motors are so expensive, so $4500 with a core credit seemed allot better. I've also been told to look into buying a Kubota motor as a replacement - one sailor told me you can buy them "marine-ized" . Anyway, thanks for the reply and best wishes, Rick

dickybrewer5 Seaspot, rebuilding seems like a great idea. I've come to the conclusion that I should take out the present motor piece by piece and see whats wrong with it.... if it can be rebuilt, then re-installing it piece by piece would be possible and I'd never have the expense and concern of cutting into a perfectly good monohull body. I've just begun to get serious about doing something about this, so I'm looking for any info/tips people can give me. I've done allot of wrenching, but never on a sailboat diesel motor. Thanks very much for your reply's and happy sailing, Rick
