just back....

we just got back from our trip. i was supposed to wash the boat today, but haven't quite finished up....put it on the "to do" list.
we left from Blaine, checked into customs at White Rock, then up to Silva bay. That was about 8 hours. From there, next day to Smuggler's cove. Absolutely perfect, met friends, stayed about 5 days. The kids could swim, dingy & kayak to their hearts content, and we were able to pop by dingy to Buccaneer Bay and to Secret Cove for more provisions (ie beer). It was so nice that we forego plans to pop up to Pender Harbour, figuring that we'll be back next year on our way to Desolation.
From Smuggler's, we went to Jedidiah Island for 2 nights. Would have enjoyed that better if the wind was not as strong. We poked into Codfish bay, decided against staying a night there, and then we spent one night at White Rock beach, and one at Deep Bay. Lovely island, and the view from Home bay is amazing.
From there we went to Newcastle Island for a night (about 3 1/2 hrs), and then motorsailed against the wind in Trincomali to Montague (Shell beach side) and home through Active Pass.
It's a long slog up to the Sunshine Coast by slow boat, but it was great to swim in warm water and enjoy some new sights.

hangupndrive Just returned to Seattle from a 2 week cruise to the Gulf Islands. If I'm not too late, here are a couple of additional thoughts: Make sure you are in Ganges for the Saturday market. We always spend Friday night. Dine at the Treehouse cafe for a (reasonably priced) unique experience.

Montegue harbor is a personal favorite. I like to spend the night on the hook on the north side of the peninsula by the shell beach. that is outside of the harbor itself. If the wind is blowing from the south you'll have more protection and a more intimate experience. four to six boats at anchor vs. about a hundred at anchor or on bouys.

At risk of sounding like a total jerk.....
Regarding Buchart Gardents, unless you're a horticultural enthusiast or over about 55, don't go. My wife and i are very active 40's/30's with children, have seen it before and don't really need to again. To be sure, it's beautiful but there is not much else around.

I'd add a day or two in Sidney. thursday evenings from 5:30 - 8:30 there is an Artist/Farmers Market on the main drag. Port Sidney maina is the nices marina i have ever visited. We were impressed by a wine tasting hosted for visiting cruisers. There are fantastic book stores, bakeries and nice, reasonably priced restaurants.

Both times approaching Otter Bay on North Pender Isl. in the late afternoon we have seen Orcas.

Also, if you have never used Canadian Tide and Current tables, please see my other post from today, July 26 for a helpful point.

Have a great trip!~

thanks we will clear customs in white rock, so that will hopefully be easy. after that I am just trying to figure out a easy route up there, that's not too long (well, I guess it's all pretty long). I haven't heard of Ballet bay, will have to check that out. I am not going to spend any time in the southern gulf islands, since that's our usual stomping ground.
appreciate the feedback!

jackdale You will have to clear customs/immigration along the way.

You can get from Gibson's to Pender Harbour in one day, but Smuggler's and Secret Cove beckon. I would also recommend going a bit further north to Musket Island or Ballet Bay.

You could then go back down the west side of the Strait. With stops along the eastern side of the Gulf Islands:

Silva Bay
Pirates Cove
Princess Bay
Clam Bay
Montague Harbour
Port Browning/Winter Cove/Lyall Harbour - you should able to get to Blaine from there.

Pender Harbour

I haven't tried to work out an itinerary but stops that I'd try to make would be:
Friday Harbour
Buchart gardens
and of course several less crowded anchorages to and from

Blaine to Pender Harbour

It has been many years since going up there. Can anyone suggest a 10 day itinerary, leaving from Blaine to Pender Harbour, and back, in about 10 days? We are planning on having a long first day to Silva Bay or Gibsons. What are your suggested stops/plans etc?
