Oddly enough there are two ways to get "stinky stuff" in the typical cheap marine head. It flushes with seawater, and if there is seawater left in the lines or in the bowl, that gets really ripe after a couple of days of stagnating.
Or--the joker valve (looks like a big duck bill, supposed to close by itself to keep the sewage "out" downstream) eventually fails and lets sewage back into your bowl. Just as pleasant.
Either way...Sounds like time to knuckle down and either replace the whole thing (I'm another Lavac fan, they're just a better way to go, if I may make the pun) or buy an overhaul kit, which used to be about 1/2 the price of a new cheap head.
Plenty of web sites to explain head plumbing options. Bottom line is that for a stinkless bowl, either you flush with fresh water and then pump it dry, or you pump it dry and keep it dry, which means everything has to be working right. Rubber gloves, chlorox, roll of paper towels, some plastic trash bags and a helper, and it is no fun job but no big deal to overhaul or replace.

|mitiempo||No, just using the wet/dry bowl lever should do it if the pump is in working condition. The Lavac is a different design and has no pump like yours.|

|TheRealBill||I was wondering...after reading about the Lavac Popular...on the model I have...do I have to have the lid down to get that sticky water out the seacock? I've been pumping it with the lid up to see whats happening and I'm not sure whats going on there...|

That lever above the pump handle is for dry bowl or wet bowl. If I remember to the left pumps water through the head and to the right pumps the bowl dry.
When you replace it look at the Lavac. Best head I've ever owned. And the simplest as well.

Head...How does this thing work?
Hi, I will be replacing this head with a new one soon but can someone please explain how this stinking them works. The water in them smells like ($@*^
There is no holding tank...it's suppose to just flush out the side...I wont be using it but I want to know how to remove that stinking water so I remove it without getting all that smelly water anywhere near me.
How can I flush it and then just leave it empty? Thanks in advance
