CalebD There seems to be a 'thing' with fires at the Haverstraw Marina. About 5 years ago the restaurant there burned: Review: Hudson Water Club in West Haverstraw | Metromix Hudson Valley
Glad you're boat was ok.

Thanks for the head's up. I actually hadn't heard anything about this (does anyone else think that perhaps the marina should have notified us?), but yes it does not appear to be related to the hurricane, although the investigation has not yet really begun because they need to raise the boat it started on. What a horrible thing, to make it through a hurricane, only to have this happen just a few days later. Thankfully not near our boat, although I guess there is ash all over the place. A couple other sailboats not so lucky.

2d Wind Came back to report that Haverstraw seems like a good place to weather out the storm, boat came through without a scratch, and that appears to be generally the case for boats inside and outside of the marina. Of course, Irene ended up being significantly weaker than forecasted by the time it reached up that way, but I think I would recommend it in any event.

CalebD 2d Wind,
Glad to hear you have a reservation at Haverstraw marina. The marina is pretty good if pricey as most marinas are and I think you will enjoy sailing in Haverstraw Bay. I'd suggest you also take some trips up river to the Hudson Highlands as it is drop dead gorgeous up there and not so far from H'straw.
Our present default plan is to strip off the sails and ride it out on our mooring. Watching and waiting to see what Irene does. If a more proactive course is required on our part we may try for a transient slip across the river in Tarrytown (if really strong north or easterly winds are likely).
Hoping for the best but imagining the worst.

2d Wind Thanks for the heads up. We have made a reservation, actually planning on staying there for the rest of the season. We live along the Hudson We generally keep it on the Shrewsbury River, a bit up from Sandy Hook in Sea Bright on a private dock. Even though it's up river, pretty exposed area, thin strip of land that regularly floods. Haverstraw seemed like a good option, I will report back on how it goes (hopefully with good news).

Are you staying put?

CalebD 2d Wind,
I hope you plan on getting to Haverstraw marina early or get them to take a reservation. There was supposed to be a Regatta up there this weekend but it is likely that other folks have the same idea as you. Nyack Boat Club - About the Leukemia Cup Regatta
Haverstraw marina has floating docks and is decently sheltered so it is not a bad place to consider for weathering the worst of what MAY be coming.
Where do you normally keep your boat that the Hudson seems a better choice?

2d Wind Thanks for the reply. That's what we're hoping about where we're headed (fingers crossed).

We never went upriver, we stayed put. I can thankfully say that we're on the Chesapeake at a much better designed, built, and maintained marina this time around.
