daydreambeliever Hello Lonebull,
Have you ever sailed along the west coast of florida to the Keys? If yes, was the sailing ok. You never really hear of anyone doing this on this web site. I figure there must be a reason no one ever seems the talk about this.

sailingdog Hmmm... I would probably use a tack pennant (which is a short line that runs between the actual tack shackle and the tack of the sail), and allow the jib to go almost all the way to the mast. It makes seeing past the jib easier and reduces the chafe on the foot of the jib.

A jerrycan is another term for external portable fuel can. See for more about it... "Jerry" comes from the fact that the German army used them quite a bit.

Normally, they were made of metal, but now are more commonly plastic.

Yes I have the sails up, which brings me to another question. The jib is to short to go all the way to the mast if it is secured to the boat at the tack and the foot is touching the top of the cabin. Would it be better to secure the tack with a line to allow the head to go all the way to the mast which leaves about 12 inches between the foot and the cabin top? Also what is a jery can(read about it in one of the articles on this web site)?

sailingdog If you're going too slow, then the currents and wind will take over, and the boat will not have steerageway. The minimum speed you need to be moving at will vary with the wind and current at the time.

Also, do you have the sails up when this happens?

Gulf Coast

Hello everyone, Is there anyone out there from the Gulf Coast? I spend hours on this web site and never see anything about the Gulf. I am very green. I have taken a one day sailing course and have purchased a old Newport 16. Currently I am sailing on a small lake because I don't trust myself to get back to my starting point. Docking (putting the boat back on the trailor) so far is a nightmare and it is a tiny boat. Sometimes when my boat is going very slow it just spins around and heads back where I came from no matter what I do with the rudder. Help, What am I doing wrong? I don't remember anything about this from class. Of course we were on a much larger boat. Thanks for any advise
