You should see the machines we have when we started out just shopping for a couple simple snow mobiles to dink around on. Now we have two high end long track mountain machines with billet bling and custom work. Why does this seem like a trend in my life? I guess I learned it from Dad. We went out once to pick up "a little john boat for us to fish from", what Mom was told, and came home with a deep V Chris Craft.

I'm not saying that keeping a boat in water is always better that keeping it out, however arranging some sort of watch on your boat is not difficult or expensive.
I think that giving V-birth to kid(s) is a good idea. I have not had kids staying too long on my boat, but on a few occasions when I had small guests, they always liked to congregate in V-birth creating two separate areas one for adults and another for kids. Besides they had no problem going outside through the sky hatch, completely bypassing rest of the boat

Great information. But, I should be honest about much of December plans having as much to do with getting out of -50F temps for a few weeks than actually finding/buying/sailing a boat (think excuse for a trip down south). Good to know that the access to folks on the docks will be significantly less. That will keep our expectations low. Heck, our top temps here in summer are lower than Florida's low temps in winter. We will be on the beach swimming by ourselves while people watch us in disbelief! If we didn't go to Florida, we would be doing some sort of tropical vacation and that would really cut into the deposit!

I would wait till summer and come with as much money then to start your search. While warmer in December in NC and Fla than Alaska, it is too cold for a lot of the locals to sail. I am just guessing from my time sailing in New Orleans. There are some that will sail year around but for the most part the docks will be empty and you will get a lot less traction looking then than the beginning of boating season. If you do find a boat you are then responsible for storage until you come sail it. Adding the cost of travel, and lodging for 3 and the boat hauling and storage for 8 months, just for the possibility to sail a little bit in December, does not make sense, IMO. Besides the "cold", the days are short, so less boat work or sailing can be done each day. All that extra money could go to a bigger boat or cruising kitty.
Can you work in December and take 2 months off in summer? You could do more research all winter, have some people here look at some boats you are interested in. There is a thread of people willing to check out boats for others somewhere on this site. You could use that to narrow down some boats, then one of you fly out and pay to survey the boat, purchase and be ready to start sailing or working on the boat when the other arrives.
I second the Catalina 27 not being the boat for you. The V-berth felt too short for me and I am 5'10". No way a couple of 6 footers being comfortable up there.

Oriental is exactly where we are seeing some of the boats we had interest in, and one of the things that drew our attention towards NC. One thought we had was to purchase in one place, lets say NC, and work our way into other areas, storing the boat in a new location after a few trips and exploring that area. Lets say working south over a number of years.
Our thoughts regarding storing out of the water had less to do with fees, than with maintenance with us out of the state. I was thinking a boat stored in salt water would require much more attention than a boat out of water. That has been my experience knowing folks with boats up here, they pull out their powerboats after each use to avoid the maintenance, more so than slip fees. This is for boats in the 20-30 foot range. Of course, much easier to pull out a powerboat, no haul out costs.

Oriental is one of our favorites, along with Elizabeth City, Little Washington, Belhaven, Beaufort....and as far as storage on the hard, I only see it in the frozen north or when people are doing major refits...or worse, when the vessel is in probate. We've been out for only one week periods for the last twenty-five years on this boat with the longest span in the water being four years. ....and yes, those Freedoms are nice, too! I kept my boat some 3000 miles south from my place for a while. I and my girlfriend have had wonderful spontaneous three-four day vocations in midst of a winter, just fly in, get on a boat and go sailing for couple days and fly out.
After sailing Catalina 27 for a week, I, personally, don't think that this boat is all that great, I found it uncomfortable and poorly designed on outside, anything on a deck was out of sync, and in a way. It is very good boat inside at dock or anchor .
I'd suggest to look at Pearson 28 (not a Triton, next version), You can find one at $10000-15000 range and this boat can take you out of sight of land when you outgrow protected waters, or smaller Tartans.
I can also pitch for Freedom line of boats, however I understand that it is sort of unconventional boats and may not be everyones cap of tea. They tend to be more expensive too.

Wow! Thanks for the great information. That is just the stuff we were hoping to hear. I would love exploring all of the Florida coast over a number of visits. Seems like there will be a ton to see before we even venture out to the Bahamas etc. Am I hearing correctly though that NC is a bit trickier than some of the other areas mentioned? Mostly we had started thinking up that way due to the number of boats that were available in NC.
So it sounds like this isn't too crazy an idea. We have looked at the 28 Cat as well and it looks really nice, just newer and a tad more expensive but not out of reach. Any other boats anyone would suggest? Thanks so much! Can't wait to show this to my wife, we were both a bit nervous that the general response was going to be we were nuts!
