I recently acquired a 1999 Catalina 470. Since the initial seatrial I noted the dual wheel steering to be extremely stiff. It really takes two hands to turn the wheel from either wheel. I would like to know if other owners experienced the same problem and what they did to correct it to obtain the optimal performance. I really cannot feel the water pressure against the rudder and it cannot be doing my autopilot any favors.
The surveyor and initial yard cited no major defects. the riggers took apart the brake and found some friction and loosened the brake pads. Still very stiff. The cable do not seem to be overly tight.
Also I would like to know what others do with their transmission while sailing. I have the 3 bladed fixed prop. it spins while sailing. In reverse it stops but to replace it back in to neutral requires a severe slowdown in speed. What is the best position for this transmission. the previous owner placed it in reverse, but I know some transmission do not favor this.
