sailingdog Nope, believe the brass pelicans he's talking about have their beaks pointed down, almost at desk level, to be used as a pointer on the chart. The one you've shown is looking up.

Brass Pelican Chart Markers?

Hi Everyone,
I''m searching for a gift for a friend who was in the US Navy. He has described a brass (bronze?) paperweight in the shape of a pelican that was used aboard ship to hold down charts on the chart table. The beak of the pelican was used as a pointer to mark positions.

Has anyone else heard of these markers? Do you know where I might obtain one?
