Mast rake

Jeff,
What mast rake would you recommend for a Ranger 37 ? I intend to try to race it next season when I learn a bit more about how to handle the spinnaker. but this season will be learning , learning, & more learning. Thanks.

Exactly!.... back stay tension doesnt always mean head stay tension especially on a 7/8 rig.

S/D....."Both mast bend and mast rake will tighten up the head stay and make the sail more powerful, by allowing it to have a deeper draft." .... This comment doesn't make much sense in my case.

7/8 rig Jeff...with this type of rig you need either a Jumper strut, swept back spreaders, or running backstays only then can you achieve proper headstay tension. Otherwise as soon as you start to get proper headstay tension on a Sabre, without a jumper strut or Runners you start to bow the mast forward just above the lowers.
Try to take it back with the backstay and you induce lots of light air killing, flattening, in the upper part of the mast.
We're still learning, but I'm leaning towards 6-8" Rake 1-3" bend and runners to take the sag out off the head stay when the wind pipes up.

Jeff_H For what it is worth, depending on the design of the boat neither mastbend nor rake automatically means greater forestay tension. Prebend can be induced into a spar with high amounts of shroud tension, or with babystay tension on a masthead rig, which in terms slightly shortens the length of the mast loosening the forestay. By the same token, a mast can be further raked by loosening the forestay.

CharlieCobra I used 6 degrees of rake on mine. She seems to like it.

pluscard My j/24 racing buddy in annapolis just reduced his rake slightly, which reduces tension on the headstay. This in turn allowed his jib to have a better shape, and it must have worked - he won the 2nd race saturday.
