Measuring MY dipstick on my M25 is NOT going to do YOu any good, since I have a different engine. I suggest, since it appears your dipstick is broken, that you simply buy a new one. Either find a local Universal dealer, or go to Marine Diesel Engines and Engine Parts from Torresen Marine's Marine Diesel Direct - Universal - Volvo - Westerbeke - Yanmar - MASE (a handy bookmark if ever there was one!).

|RandyD||Thank you, that is helpful. My primary problem though is that the seal is not fixed on the dipstick. It slides freely. So when I push the dipstick all the way to the bottom it reads one quart over full with 4 quarts in it. Is the seal firmly attached to your dipstick? If it is please measure where it is on the stick. Thanks for replying.|

|Stu Jackson||The rubber end of the dipstick is a giveaway. It is a SEAL. Run the engine, turn it off, then slightly lift up the dipstick to break the seal, wait a moment, then re-insert to read the oil level. You may have to rub the dipstick off doing this. I check my oil level before I start the engine: pull the stick out, break the seal, reinsert, read level. Most all Universal engines are like this.|

Universal M4-30 Dipstick, Sliding stopper
Bought a Pearson with a Universal M4-30 diesel. Good running but dipstick is smooth with a (now) sliding rubber stopper on it. Changed oil (4 qts with filter--Correct?) and the oil shows correctly with the rod PART WAY into the hole. Can someone PLEASE measure their dipstick and tell me the distance from the bottom end of the stick to the bottom (or top) of the rubber stopper? Would really appreciate it as the specs say fill to the mark on the dipstick.
