deniseO30 a lot of people using anything is reason for concern! There are many boats out there with diesels you will surely love too but, if you really love the boat your looking at and want a diesel it really is your decision to make. Others have done it. You can reduce costs by doing allot of the work yourself, it's not rocket science. I'd say the skill level is equal to DIY 5 on a scale of 10.

Yes, the A4 is a good engine that you could also use until you have the funds to do the conversion later on.

williamkiester I saw that one and liked it but it is a little expensive for me. I do like the idea of having a brand spanking new engine in the boat, but that seems too expensive and difficult based on the info here. I think I'll try to find a boat with the diesel already installed as you suggested. A lot f different people with different experience levels will be using the boat which makes me nervous about the gas engine.

nickmerc I second the question... what's wrong with the A4? Mine starts every time, I can hand start it if the starter fails, it runs smoother than a diesel, and it is very easy to maintain.

imagine2frolic The Atomic Bomb is a great engine. Yes, it's gasoline, but proper maintanence, a look see before statring, blower, and cheap tune ups will give you a reliable engine that's trouble free........i2f

SEMIJim And now the inevitable "why": Why do you want to do this?

williamkiester This is great information. Thanks. Has anyone out there installed one of the Beta Marine engines and new exhaust as an A4 replacement themselves or done most of the work? The full service install at $10k or so puts the boat out of reach financially. Wondering if I shouldn't just wait for something that has been repowered with diesel already. Whatever boat I end up with, I'm hoping she comes with a newer motor or I get it cheap enough to replace the motor to keep my wife happy.

fordo The supposed "drop-ins" really only match the A-4 footprint. They are all taller and will require a new, and larger, exhaust system. I replaced the A-4 in my Tartan 30 and I needed a new bed. exhaust sytem and cover. The cost for these was not a major part of the total cost to repower, about $10,000. I now have a 3YSM 30 Yanmar that always starts and always runs well. A large investment, to be sure, But it has been great for the peace of mind.
