If the AC charger is a reliable 3 stage model, as it should be, there is no reason to turn it off.

There is a good reason to have some sort of non-AC, passive battery charging capacity on the boat.

I'm with BLJones, what draw do you have that will kill batteries after two weeks when there's no-one on board? That needs to be fixed first.
Or the batteries were toast anyway?

My Victron charger/inverter shuts off after 10 hours on "float" and needs to be reset in ordre to charge again. Also, how many batteries do you have? Perhaps one or more of them is fried and and pulling down the overall current; can you disconnect all the batteries and measure their voltage separately?

What type of charger are you using? Some "smart" chargers only charge if they detect a battery and if you are dead flat they won't see them. And yeah, what loads are on your batteries while you are gone?

I think you already know the answer.
However... as a failsafe, try a different charger. The problem may be the charger, not the batteries.
Having said that, assuming your demand power draw is give/take 0 (nobody on the boat, so no systems running other than stereo memory and maybe a bilge pump?) I am surprised your batteries are flat.

So, you left them charging for 3 days and they still read 9 volts?

Have I runied my batteries
I am a full time live aboard, went on two week vacation forgot to turn off battery switch did turn off charger. Got home batteries had no voltage on the volt meter turned on charger three days later volt meter reading less than 9 volts. The are 220 amp AGM do not know the actual age but guess 3 years old. Think they are shot?
