1/2" That's what I use and it does the job nicely. I didn't go brass, I went with steel. I also leave the cable attached as a backup.

We just had a new mast base made by a local machinist. The existing one was someone's attempt to replace the original but was made from aluminum. This on is 1/4in stainless. This is based on RJohnson's post of the drawing.

We finally made some progress on the rebuild of the trunk which turned into rebuild pretty much everything. This is a picture of the V berth braces and some bracing for the keel trunk (rebuild, after demo and before demo). We used 3/4 in marine ply and filleted it in place. Next step is to sand it down and fiberglass the seams, eventually hoping to be sailing this spring!

|sailnova||Thanks for the pics and info Rod! A bit of an update as to where we are with my boat. We decided to remove all of the interior wood and sand off the paint. We are almost ready to rebuild the v-berth and some support for the keel trunk that runs perpendicular. We are also putting in a hatch at the back which will be fiberglassed in for the gas tank...lots to get done before the spring! Hoping to do a bit of trailer sailing this year. I'll send pics as we make progress.|

|rippy||Hey Rod, great input as usual! Seems as how I have missed a couple of posts on this very valuable thread, but did get a notice on your recent postings. I have been in Western Australia for a month or so now, and will be there hopefully til Spring hits NY. I am helping my son with his boat which is similar to the Cal21, but wider and much more stable. Pretty windy down here in Albany on King George Sound. Interesting to read that you folks weren't trying to trailer your boat at the end. I think that may be the way I will have to go too. Theoretically it seems as launching and hauling each sail is doable, but as a practical matter....|

I missed the question about the notch in hte keel for the cable, ours had it, but some boats came with the tip of the keel cut off and a Stainless-Steel hook in it's place.... I remember seeing at least 1 or 2 like that on display at the New England Boat show in the early 1970's. However, I've never seen one since!
We modified our keel about 2 years before we sold her after the boatyard tried to winch the keel up flush and snapped the tip of the keel off (Luckily with the boat on hte cradle? so the keel couldn't drop far!).
You can count me as one who will back up the need to be ABSOLUTELY sure that the cable is well seated in that notch before raising the keel too far. We ultimately just hooked the cable on each Fall before haulout, raised the keel just enough to remove the locking bolt and instructed the yard to raise the keel after they hauled us on hte travel-lift.

The original setup was a 1" diameter Stainless-Steel bolt through the two sides of the keel trunk. This bolt had a hard rubber washer on each side to seal it. We used to have to tighten the bolt about 1/4 turn each spring after lauching to reduce the weeping. After a week or so it would swell up and stop dripping. If you trailer your boat it should still swell up if kept damp.
I have all sorts of pics of our locking bolt, since we modified that (after an encounter with a rock!) but I'll have to see if I have any pics of the pivot bolt.
Using the locking bolt while sailing is extra insurance against loss of the keel.

|AuxSailor||Wow! Thanks. This is great info... We believe that we have found a notch on the back of the keel. Saturday has snow in the forecast... Perfect day to dive and make sure that we have the cable securely attached. What we have read about dropped keels is pretty harrowing. The picture is a tremendous help. We'll keep you posted. Think warm thoughts for this weekend.|

You might be able to see it if the water is clear enough. In the photo there is a shackle that my winch connects with to raise and lower. I have never tried to remove the winch line because diving in seems like the easiest way to reattach. Good luck and if you need more info I'll try to help.

|sailnova||A couple of other things to note - once you hook the line onto the back of the keel make sure you remove the locking pin before cranking it up. There is also potential that the keel plug is in place. Check out this website for more details - Keel Plug page|
