If you are going to haul out for the cutlass bearing replacement you should also look at the inside of the boat by the prop shaft.
Many older boats use a 'shaft log' and 'stuffing box' to round out the inside portion of the prop shaft entry. If your boat still has a stuffing box on it I'd recommend changing the packing when you pull out for the other work. If you have the PSS shaft seal I can't help you.

Allied Mistress Cutlass bearing replacment
My wife and I bought a 1973 39' Allied Mistress Nov 2010 apon haul out it was noted that the cutlass bearing was in need of replacment. I knew that we would be rehauling the boat in the spring for storage so a chose to launch the boat after a 4 grueling day bottom paint job. Tiss better to use a new toy than to try and fix every thing on it. I contacted the old owner whom said he replaced the bearing in 2005. Not a proublem. He informed me that in order to replace the bearing I had two choices: A) drop the rudder (200# and a three ft hole) B) notch the leading edge of the rudder and post. (E-Gads you have got to be kidding) It seems there is not enough room aft of the shaft and forward of the rudder to get the bearing out.
So my question is does any one have expeience in replacing cutlass bearings on Allied Mistress
