Rick- Welcome to Sailnet! Good to hear of another N-41 on SF Bay! What's the name of your boat? If you go to Newport, Neptune, Gulf sailboats built by Capital Yachts you can join the Newport Yahoo group; there are several N-41 owners who discuss the boat on that listserv.

I live in Bay area and own a 1979 41 have owned it for 12 years , its located in sausalito but also have a slip at pier 39. have done alot of mods

I was just perusing a Newport 41 on Yachtworld (nice lines) and I didn't see a mast in the salon. Curious, is the mast hidden behind a bulkhead? This doesn't seem like it would be a design with a deck-stepped mast (not that there is anything wrong with deck-stepped masts)

KeelHaulin They shortened the P measurment to improve the IOR rating. To do this they had to make the J measurment 1' longer to keep the center of effort of the sailplan in the correct location. Making the rig taller added ~6' of luff length which helped upwind performance. This tall rig with short boom was also meant to fly a blooper while sailing downwind to make up for the loss of sail area on the smaller main.

How is the in-cockpit sheeting arrangement on the older 41? Seems like it would be great for single-handing; but difficult to deal with on downwind legs and gybes because the mainsheet would drape across the inner cockpit.

Early 41 model history

One question I had was that early 41 model had a J of 16ft and longer boom (E 17?) and shorter mast (I 48). At least mine does (hull #3/1969). Later models appeared to move the mast back 1 ft with J 17, lengthen the mast (I 52) and shorten boom. Another variance is that early was single spreader where later was double. I was curious as to the motivation(s) for the change(s) and if there were other underwater changes like keel. The rudder was changed of course.

KeelHaulin Hey I own one located in Richmond California! In all the time I have been here on Sailnet I never thought of throwing up a post asking who else owns one of these rare birds (LOL). Great to see a thread started so we can all chat about it. Sorry if this thread gets hijacked; but I did not know there were so many people here that own one in the SF Bay Area or have owned one here on Sailnet!! I have been feeling quite lonely while discussing the great sailing properties of the early C&C's while some people who think they know everything about boats call them IOR broach-coaches, and poorly constructed. Neither can be further from the truth as we all know!!

I've owned mine for coming up on 5 years; we sail SF Bay regularly. We need to get a Newport 41 raft-up going this spring or summer. I know of 3 other 41's in SF Bay that are not owners who have posted here. A second 41 resides at my dock and I helped a guy buy one about 2 years ago; which is now down in Redwood City.

Would love to talk shop with some of you guys who have owned 41's for many years or have sold yours. We could start another thread on the boat specific "Newport" forum here or start one in "Gear and Maintenance". Also, there is a Newport e-mail listserver on Yahoo where everyone who was on the old Sailnet listserv are. Go to Newport, Neptune, Gulf sailboats built by Capital Yachts and follow the Yahoo Group Banner link. Recently the Wife of Bill Smith (co-founder of Capital Yachts) joined and put up a couple of nostalgic posts.

The Newport 41 still turns heads and wins races! Great to hear one won overall in the Figawi; and my boat was selected for a photo in the 2010 Cruising World Calendar!!

marksaviation I was an owner on hull #129 a 1982 MK 2 and sold her in 2003. I am also happy to share with any questions a new owner may have.

Talt to a real owner

I have owned one for 24 years, and i know several other owners in So Cal.
It is an excellent sailing boat. As for strength , I have shipped mine coast to coast twice on a truck , crossed the Gulf Stream 12 times. sailed successfullu upwind in 34 kts true and 7 foot seas . The boat was built to C&C spec and therefore was able to use C&C as a designer in their advertising
Some earlier hull numbers , (guessing under 10) may have had
some un reinforced forward sections. and I heard of some remote cases where mast step structure absorbed water. Yourself and any good surveyor can detect any specific issues
One thing all of these boats need is a rudder upgrade, That is the only one issue. Also, there has never been a keel bolt issue or a gap opening forward
or anywhere for that matter. As for sailing , forward decks stay dry and at anchor, no annoying butt slapping to keep you awake at night.

My boat rayed 93 and could sail it ,I was dinged 3 seconds a mile for my rudder
but that was worth it considering the improved control under spinnaker in heavier air. I recently sold mine ( the yellow one on ebay) but will be happy to answer questions,

Jeff_H I know these boats quite well having raced on a couple and had one at my dock that I helped the owners maintain.
