I am looking at a Precision 14 for a first boat. I will be learning to sail on whatever I settle on. It would be mostly used on the Ohio River and small lakes in Kentucky for a day on the water or reaching a camping area. At first I will be sailing by myself and my wife and our two boys would join me as it seems safe. The owner is asking $900. I have not looked at the boat in person yet and would like some thoughts on this make and model. Thanks.

The P 14' should be a fine learning platform since it has main and jib sails.
Precision is still making boats, just not the 14 footer anymore.

There are a few P 14's that were listed here:

Note that the asking price is more or less in line with your $900 option.

Visit the boat and bring your digital camera. Then if you have any questions about the boat the photos will help describe the condition of the boat and gear.

We used to have a Precision 23 and loved it. The build quality was good and the company was easy to work with when we needed parts replaced. There's a great Precision message board at Precision Sailboats Forum - Message Index

I taught myself (not done yet!!) in a P-15, and couldn't be happier. I've had wifey and me, and two kids with no problems in it. In fact, it was a little easier to handle with the extra hull weight.

I fell upon it by accident (only dinghy available at local shop) but think I found a real gem of a learning craft. I suspect that learning on a sloop will make it a little easier to transition into a bigger boat also.

Just make sure you inspect the trailer carefully. I find many trailers highly neglected, even with reasonably well-maintained boats sitting on them.

Also, since having my P-15, what little questions and parts needs I have had, have been handled by Precision's excellent support staff. ie Paul. When you call their number, you talk to a guy who knows every model inside and out, parts are readily available, and very reasonably priced.
