bit of money say ....50 grand. :D My question is, would one be better off using this as a down payment on a really nice boat or just purchase a boat within that price bracket? I do not need above 35 feet (single hander) one or two hulls are fine with me. I probably would prefer two as I am an social creature. I do not need new, just in good to better condition. Coastal cruising with a longer trip now and then would be my preference. If anyone has had a similar situation and or a honest opinion I would most grateful. AKscooter

Have you sailed before? Give us some more to go on...

The purchase price is just the gettin in the door price, after that it's maintenance, slip fee's, storage, etc...

Can you afford to maintain a 30+ boat?

There's a lot of variables!

additional info

Sorry for the sparse info. Yes, I can afford the dock fees and maintenance costs. One of my concerns was that I did not want to spend more than 150 k total. I would have to finance the balance above the initial 50. I currently sail a catalina 22. I do enjoy it. I am not a racer, nor do i aspire to be one. I will definitely have to improve my skills with a larger boat and will hire captains to teach me how to properly handle such a vessel. I am looking for a modicum of comfort with sea kindly abilities. I have crewed other larger boats in the keys and San Juans for short trips. Always wanted to spend a lot more time on the water. Again, thank you for your response and if you or anyone has any other questions please feel free to contribute!

Around here, ie Salish Sea if I can swag where you are at, you will mostly find mono hulls, A few cats and tris are scattered around.

As far as who much to spend......For $120-140 you could get yourself into a 30-34' Hunter, Catalina, Bene or jeanneau new! There is an older 07 36' 36i Jeanneau for 160K in seattle, equal new would be 180'ish. A 35' Jeanneau in Anacortes for 125K or there abouts, not remembering actual dollars right now.

Or there are LOTs of 36' Catalina's or equal from 20 yrs ago for the mid 20-50K range. BUT, these might also take some $$ to fix up. vs a new one, go sailing, make payments which might be less than the fix up costs to a degree too. You will need 20% down typically.

I do know of a Bavaria match 35, a fast cruise/race boat, 110K or there abouts, with a 0 down option. If I could get this personally, I would.

There is NO right or wrong per say, only how you want to spend the money.

HERE is a yachtworld listing. BUT, it is owner listed in the back of ANY recent 48 north and potentially Yachting in the classified. I also have Bills email, ph#'s etc. The boat is moored at his house, south of Kingston on Olympic peninsula. He is a member of the local YC in Edmonds.

If you want the owners name, PM me, I'll send them to you. Also, to visit the boat, driving from BC would not be too bad, OR, you can catch Amtrac in Vancouver, take to edmonds, walk 1/4 mile north to the ferry terminal, I am sure Bill would meet you on the other side to give you a ride to his house and back to the ferry terminal in Kingston. There is a Motel here in Edmonds, 1/4-1/2 mile from terminals, and motel or two in Kingston again, easy walk 1/2 mile or so from the ferry terminal too.

This boat would be a bit to a lot quicker than a C36, probably 30 secs a mile quicker. May pound a bit more in some conditions, but with the light airs around her, a better boat from a sailing perspective.

In todays' market with 50K you can certainly get a pretty decent boat in good shape in the 30-35 foot range... but you can also certainly get newer/maybe nicer for more money.

Some of the Catalinas mentioned are pretty hard to beat for liveability in the PNW.
