EJO Thanks for your answers, I just sailed the 81 miles (13 hrs) so I didn't have to worry about gas.
I did find out last season that at 2400 rpm or so (6 knts in my 32'ter) I'm using a little less than 1 gallon (more likely 3/4 gallon (2.85 liters)) per hour which was a lot less than my previous power boat with the twin V-8's with 4 barrel carburetors on them. Sailing is great again.

Hmmm well I've been doing a lot of idling and cold starts so that might distort it. Need to measure on a longer cruise.

MarkSF !/2 gallon per hour? Geez, I'd better rip my Universal Diesel out and put an Atomic 4 in. I'm using a gallon per hour right now.

I think that 1/2 gal per hour is a little optimistic at full throttle. I estimate consumption at just less that 1 gal per hour. A lot will have to do with how well your engine is tuned and your engine rpms. A good speed for me is around 6 knots at about 2200 rpm.

nickmerc On my Pearson 30 with an A4 I can get 25-30 hours run time before I become worried about low fuel with a 20ish gal tank. Prop condition is a huge factor as is bottom condition and sea conditions and wind intensity and direction. I would not count on miles but hours as the way to mesure fuel consumption.

hellosailor Moyer Marine is "the" name in A4s. See Atomic 4 Fuel Consumption - Moyer Marine Atomic 4 Community
where they discuss less than one gallon per hour.

Having a clean hull, clean correct prop, and not pushing top speed will all make big differences for fuel consumption in any boat.

I'd also suggest taking a shorter sea trial, maybe two hours or a half day, to shake down any possible problems before running off 80 miles. Measuring fuel consumption is something you could do during that time as well.

MPG for Gas Universal or Atomic 4

Can anybody give me an estimate from experience how many miles per gallon I can get from a Universal or Atomic 4 gasoline 30 HP engine running at say 2,000 to 2,200 rpm.
I'm pushing a 32' 10,500 lbs sailboat with 6.7 hull speed.

I just bought this boat and need to move her 80 miles not knowing if I can sail her due to prevailing winds and only have a 24 gallon gas tank.

Any estimate will be appreciated. I know there are many of these 30 HP inboard in 31' plus sail boats out there and somebody must have figured this out. Previous owner can't tell and/or doesn't know.
