btrayfors Two VERY BIG MISTAKES beginners make:

1. FAILING TO GET A GOOD PROFESSIONAL SURVEY OF THE BOAT, THE ENGINE, AND THE RIGGING BEFORE THEY BUY THE BOAT; AND

2. UNDERESTIMATING THE TIME AND COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH PUTTING THE BOAT BACK INTO GOOD ORDER.

What beginners fail to realize is that sometimes even if someone GIVES you the boat, it's not a good deal. With an older boat that has not had excellent care and upgrading, this is very often the case.

GET A SURVEY, even if you have to fly a professional surveyor in to do it. Then, take a long look at the results, calculate time and materials and costs needed to put the boat in good order, and multiply these figures times 3 to 10!

This is not meant to discourage you, but to encourage you to realistically assess what you're getting into with the purchase.

lafayette The boat is in Madgascar actually, and it's vrey difficult to get a professional survey. Does anyone know a survey in Madagascar?
What are the mistake that beginners do when buying there first boat

WanderingStar You should get a complete survey of the boat. It won't be cheap, but it will give you a list of repairs needed. As for the wooden masts, there's no reason to replace them if they are not rotten. My ketch (not a CT) has wood spars 43 years old and solid. Unless yours are rotting or coming apart at the seams, they will last a lifetime.

lafayette hello Paul 2457, I'm thinking of buy a CT41 for a pretty good price of yr 1976, an also i'm pretty new to sailing. I have chosen the Ta Chiao because of the tradition look and beauty. The persons is saying the mats is in wood.
Does that make any difference or in the near furtur i need to change the masts?both of them?

Also Paul did you make the big renovation on the cokpit plywood?
