Certainly if it is gelcoat, and from the picture it appears to be. Are you sure the boat was painted?

Thanks as always, Mitiempo. So do you think a reasonable course of action is to fill and fair everywhere where I sanded too much away, and then just prep the rest with 80-grit and then prime?

The blue layers are colored gelcoat which is used so the crew laying up the hull can see more easily that they are wetting out the layers. The center section that is translucent has no gelcoat left on it by the looks of it. I don't think, from the picture, that there was any paint on the hull at all. The glossy white on the left and right side of the picture looks like gelcoat to me. I think you sanded way more off than necessary. It actually looks like everything you removed was gelcoat.

I have to think the blue was gelcoat much like my boats bottom was green gelcoat
I dont know how to tell in a picture BUT the gelcoat is much tougher than paint

Tommays: Sorry, I missed the 2 on there--it is 2333n that I used, which is what is recommended for Perfection.

Just went and tested out the longboard sander on the filling compound that has now fully cured, and it seemed to sand and fair everything pretty efficiently. Taking into account the whole hull it would/will be a bit of a job for sure, but definitely not impossible...
