Ahhh.... so there's like a switch for Hi--Lo power?
Fortunately I've never hailed the guy at the adjacent slip for spare ice.
On my delivery the broker called the USCG that we were overdue (yea, due to not having the SPOT connect work) and we got a call from them (loud and clear) in St. Petersburg and we were right off Panama City Beach, nearly 250 miles away. What wattage were they using? I shudder to think what might have happened if I hadn't answered.

I may be guilty of this. I leave my radio on ch16/25w for emergency purposes. Sometimes I forget to switch to low power when hailing.
I think letting your kids play with the radio on 16 trumps the high power thing.

We can hear that on Vineyard Sound from Nantucket, the Vineyard, the Cape, and RI.

Ray- If they didn't broadcast on 25W how would everyone that's going to go through Dodd the next day know about when slack was going to be? g

Just south of Nanaimo is a pass called Dodd Narrows. For some reason, it's become the custom to announce to the world that you're going to go through. Clear out in the middle of the Strait of Georgia you can hear the chatter of the boats saying they're going through, so a good portion of them gotta have the radio set to 25 watts transmit power.
Yeah, transmitting on high power bugs me too.

Pet Peave - Non lethal, just annoying
Been on the boat for just over a week now and I had totally forgotten how annoying this Pet Peave of mine is:
VHF Radio communications to a Harbor Master / Marina or to the next boat 40 feet away -
put it on LOW POWER you idiot!
(ooops sorry - that was a bit strong) I really do not want to hear someone calling the Camden Harbor Master for permission to dock when I am sitting in Belfast.
