Re: Sailing Apps for Android

I use EarthNC, the paid version ($9, I think). It functions really well as a chartplotter on my Droid Bionic. The paid version allows you to download large chart areas before you go out. Then you can use it in an "offline" mode - in other words if you've lost all data connectivity it still functions as a live chart plotter since you've previously downloaded all the charts you want. I also really like that you can set this app to night-vision mode and the chart goes to a red screen.

forum6691 Hello
For Android, you have MarineSecurity with MarineSecurityMap in complement.

The first have 2 features:
1- Anchor alarm when you are on board
2- Watching against the theft when you are not on board. It sends you SMS message on an other phone with location when the boat moves.

The second, MarineSecurityMap, converts the SMS messages received, in points and traces on a google map view.

Vous can have more info here Marinesecurity : News or here Android Market

Sincerely
Cyril

Thanks Adam

That may take up a lot of memory.

Jack,
Due to recent agreements with the Canadian Hydrographic Service, Navionics is currently conducting updates for Canadian cartography. This app is currently not available through the Android Market. We hope to have this coverage area available for purchase in the near future.
If you need any additional information, please do not hesitate to ask.

Best regards,
Navionics Mobile Team

Hi Adam

In the past 6 months. Do a search in the Marketplace for Navionics.

You have to be running 2.1 at least.

SHNOOL Using navionics on the iPhone. Was $10. I would NOT (yet) rely on it for my primary charting, but just funking around freshwater it is decent. It got me across the lake (where I already kind of knew where I was) in pitch black the other night around shoals.

I does track saving, POIs, basic directionals, has pretty up to date charts, although you have to download them as you change regions (not huge, 3-6meg?) It does occaisionally lockup my iphone. It also gives speed and distance travelled in Metric/US/Nautical. There is also a flip up for local windspeed and weather, sunrise/sunset/moonrise/moonset/tides.

Overall, for $10 its a steal. I really think though a tablet would be better suited for it, the phone is kinda small.
