JimsCAL If you are considering the 35, also consider the 33-2. Newer and a Hunt design (35 is a Lapworth) but a really nice boat. Bought mine 2 years ago (moved up from a Cal 9.2) and very happy with it. Solid construction, quick comfortable sailer, and very well laid out interior.

cal 34

I have a 69 cal34. It is built like a tank. I changed the gunnel rubber last year and found no cracks in the flanges. Hosing the joint before installing the replacement rubber uncovered no leaks in the hull/deck joint.
The keel is encapsulated. There are no keel bolts. One less thing to worry about.

I have been in the midst of a refit for several years now. My work keeps me away for long periods of time but there is some progress.

Check out the beam beneath the mast. It is a bit of a chore to replace but not the end of the world. I just saw a posting somewhere that suggested the cal 34s built on the east coast had beams made of less that good material. Chain plates are bolted to the bulkheads. You need to check the wood for rotting.

Email me if you have any specific questions.

micheck If you haven't come across it yet --- the log of the Mandolin (a Cal 34) traveling from the PNW to Mexico ... South Pacific ... New Zealand might give you some ideas

HDChopper Thanks Cal 30 , yes I have done weeks of research on the Cal34 alone (working on 2 years on the subject of 30-40 footers) read everything google had to offer on Cal 34's and Lapworth himself ....

Thanks for your time...

Howzit HD,
Not sure what you're looking at, but Cal made a lot of good boats. Google "sailboat designs by C. William Lapworth and read up on the 34. We're now on our second Cal and am sold on both the design and construction quality. The wheel may have been added by one of the owners, but for me it's a plus. Try to inspect all the chainplates, bulkheads and thruhulls if can. Look at the keel bolts ,if any and windows, hatches and anything that keeps water out! Check for water damage. Go for it if it's a good price. The 34 's have a huge cockpit and would be fun for a group. Good luck if you go for it.

Cal 34 things to look for

67 Cal 34 ...

anyone know pros & cons to be looking for with this old Cal I am looking at?

A question : I have looked at many Cal 34's and none of them have wheel steering any special reason why ?

I like Lapwourth designs but what would be the Cal34 weakness ?

thank you for your time ''''
