How do you run the vang to the cockpit?

I have a Sabre 34 Mk1 and want to run the vang back to the cockpit. Were using a 4:1 vang with a cascade between a bail on the boom and a bail on the mast giving us 8:1. Just like on my old J24.

I have a deck organizer on the port side with a free sheave.

I'm trying to figure out how to get a turning block fixed up at the mast base so I can feed into the organizer. Seems to be OK with the boom on the port side but but binds up with the boom on starboard. I've been advised not to clip the turning block on the mast collar as it might result in leaks.

I've considered going to a double ended system, but don't want to give up a line on the starboard side organizer. We currently run main hlyd., main sheet, reef 1, reef 2, outhaul & vang.

Any ideas on how you solved this would be great. Pictures if you have them

Is the bottom block of the vang (sans cleat) on a swivel? Can you not simply take the lead from there to your organizer sheave?

Pictures if you've got em! ;);)

I have a really big bail at the base of the mast. The kind that is v shaped (Schaefer). With the boom on port the line exits smoothly from the fiddle block to the organizer. The block and the organizer end up 8" apart. After gybing the boom to starboard the distance between the block and organizer is 24". Puts a great load on the vang in heavy weather as the line gets pulled in tighter. The mast bail and the snap shackle on the fiddle block move the exit from the sheave about 12" away from the mast base. I don't always have the opportunity to uncleat and recleat the vang on a gybe.

I'll forward some pics.

Just to support Faster's comment.

The vang should not be used a gybe preventer. Rig a proper one or use a boom brake.
