What do you think about starting a Pacific Seacraft Owner's Association?

My wife and I finished up a three week cruise in Maine, and we saw many Pacific Seacrafts during the cruise... we had some great conversations with their owners. The last week of our cruise we spent with the Cape Dory Owner's Association NE Fleet... which was a lot of fun... so now I'm wondering about a Pacific Seacraft Owners Association...

What do all of you think?

I'm thinking about the best way to start this up...

maybe collecting boat names, addresses, phone numbers, emails of the owners interested in becoming part of the PSOA (Pacific Seacraft Owners Association)... would be a start.

I'd love to meet up with owners in my area (Northeast) and I don't see any reason why that couldn't be replicated in other areas as well. The meeting could be for socializing and planning a cruise next summer... heck if I got enough interest we might be able to do something small this fall.

I think the discounts from retailers/marinas/etc. is a great idea too.

For starters...

if you are in the Northeast, have a PS of any size, shape, or color, and you'd be interested in getting together with other PS owners either on land or at sea... send me a pm with your email and cruising grounds and I'll start making a list.

In the fall we're moored in Salem, MA and we'd be happy to set up a local weekend rendezvous. When it get's colder we'd be happy to set up a winter meeting to plan something fun next summer.

Here's hoping this works out!

Folks,

In some ways, this forum does much of what an association would do except we do not physically meet.

However, that was not always the case. Long before I was a Pacific Seacraft owner, Mike Mitchell (now deceased) would hold PS rendezvous weekend at his Coveside Marina in Christmas Cove (South Bristol) Maine. The ones I remember were held in the early to mid 1990s I think. Nevertheless, I recall how impressive the fleet was - I suspect my envy of that fleet culminated in me eventually buying a PS 34. I do know that several boats rafted and exchanged questions and ideas. There were big tables of PS owners in the Coveside restaurant. There was a lobster feed and I suspect some alcohol was consumed.

As we consider this association (which is fine as far as I'm concerned), we might think of holding a few regional gatherings next summer. Nothing big - but it might be fun to compare notes.

If there is any interest in doing this in Maine, I can help set things up. I'll just leave it at that and see if this idea has any "legs" so to speak.

Just as a point of reference, such gatherings are feasible. If my aging memory serves me, there was a rendezvous in 2006 at Galesville on the Chesapeake Bay that grew out of this listserve and was organized through the efforts of some owners (particularly Tanya and Jay Ankers (sp?) former owners of PS34 INDIGO) and with the help of Crusader Yachts who were then the dealers for PSCs in the area. It was well-attended and, despite some seriously rainy weather, I believe a good time was had by all.

Probably the greatest impediment to such gatherings is that we tend to be a voyaging group who wander far and wide and may not all be near the same place at the same time...still, it's worth a try if some energetic soul (i.e., not me) wants to try and wrangle us together somewhere sometime.

I agree this board already serves much of the purpose that an owner's association does, particularly on national/international levels, with one exception: face time. My wife, a public-relations professional, always stresses the importance of face time.

Regardless, I'm certainly interested in seeing something start, and regional groups are a good beginning. I'm in Savannah, GA, and am happy to volunteer however I'm able.

I agree... I'm wondering how many PSs there are here in the Northeast... I saw quite a few at docks/moorings/anchor on our Maine cruise... (btw we thought about Christmas Cove as a potential stopping point on the cruise) I think there's potential here.

Hello all, My wife Cindy and I are new arrivals to the PSC list. I think it would be a great idea to start a PSC owners assc. We have a PSC 31 which we purchased in Feb 2010. We plan to cruise her begining in about 2.5 years and feel that we could gain a lot by interfacing with other PSC owners. Looking forward to getting to know more of you!

owner's assn

I too like the idea of an owners assn.In the 19 years that we have owned NiftyNickers we have attended 6 rendezvous including the ones in St.Michaels Md.,Essex Conn,Bristol RI,Solomans MD, Shelter Island,NY and Christmas Cove,ME.All have been terrific and all the participants always had a great time.
If we're anywhere near the get together we will be there.
Another option for location would be the Oriental-Washington NC area perhaps some factory participation would be available.

Yep. I created that site. The site has some web pages, a board, and a list of PS owner blogs... and hopefully at some point we'll get a list of PS owners.

Regarding the board... I agree that Sailnet is much more active. My intent was not to replace or subvert this great online community. I don't think I realized how active the Sailnet group was before I set up the pacificseacraftowners board... I probably should have waited and observed a little bit first. I saw a couple of problems with Sailnet though... photo uploads are challenging, the board is dominated by advertisements, and the search feature doesn't work very well. Plus I guess the spirit of the Sailnet board is that it serves lots of sailboat enthusiasts, not just PS owners. I wanted to set up something that was just for PS owners.

I guess what I'm hoping for someday is a place online where PS owners can go to chat, lookup information about PS boats, sell PS boats and gear, and generally strengthen the PS community.

I'd also like to see the community grow offline and face-to-face. I really enjoyed meeting PS owners in the Northeast during my first summer cruise in our PS34... and I'd like to continue to build on the friendship and shared interest around these amazing boats.

The question is how do we get this owners association started? My concrete idea is to have informal gathering of PS owners here in the Northeast sometime in the early winter. We can meet, swap stories, make new friends and plan some get togethers over the summer... maybe even a cruise or rendezvous. That's something fun to do during the cold winter months here in the Northeast.

Maybe this face to face component could be replicated in other regions of the country... it seems like there are a lot of PS owners in Southern California (that makes a lot of sense), for example.

I'm not sure how to find PS owners here in the Northeast... so I'm hoping that if you have a PS and you are interested in getting together this winter to talk about all things Pacific Seacraft... that you will send me a message. I'm happy to set something up.

I would be thrilled to participate in an Owners Association. Prior to owning my 34 I had a Flicka. The Flickas owner group and website are fantastic. I suggest reviewing their site at Home of the Flicka 20 Sailboat The nice thing with their setup is no matter where you sail, you can benefit from the collective knowledge of the group. Also, I would hope the group includes all PSC owners, the vessels are very similar

One idea for getting things started might be to make a directory of current PS owners, their home port and whatever contact information they'd like to share. That could allow regional groups to start self-aggregating

OK... that's pretty interesting. There are 755 documented PS vessels... that's a great start! Unfortunately the list doesn't show the registered address and hailing port of the vessel... but for $40 bucks I can get the complete list... interestingly I can also buy the same list from the USCG for $140 bucks.

Of course a less expedient, but better path would be to write program that just massages the records that come out of the coast guard database here.

The 755 documented vessels as well as the undocumented PSs would be daunting to hunt down. Perhaps we should start by attracting the community that uses this site and see if we branch out from there. I still think making a directory of interested folks would be a great first step.

I think that this is a great idea Bob. I'd be happy to build this list by hand for now...

I'm trying to figure out the best way to disseminate the list to everyone. For now I'll send out periodic emails with updates to the list of owners. I'll organize the list by state.

Sooo.... if you all want to get this started just cut and paste this into a PM:

Boat name:
Boat model:
Hull#:
Date of manufacture:
Boat port:
Owner's name(s):
Owner's home address:
Owner's email address (I can't get this from the PM):

and I'll send you the list of other interested folks!

When giving me contact information you can:
- use the boards Private Message feature to send me a message (just click on my member name)
- send me an email directly -> bdugan@stonehill.edu
- post your contact info on this thread (try to avoid this though if you can if you want to keep your contact info private).
