PCP I agree with Andrews. The boats seem similar on the water but the hulls are very different. The Mk1 is a modern boat with a much better performance.

But I find the 31 Monsun a very nice boat.

Hallberg-Rassy 31

Compare both boats with the 31ft that they make today:

tdw Chalk and cheese.

They are completely different boats. Only similarity is that they both have pointy ends and blunt ends. and even those bits are different.

Monsun is a full keeler (designed by Olle Enderlein) and the 31MkI (German Frers) is fin.

Have a look at the sail plan of the 31 and the brochure of the Monsun. You'll see the differences straightaway. Interior drawings also show major differences. Extra beam in the 31MkI, galley, head location.

I'm sure the Monsun is a fine boat but the 31 has got to be a better all rounder if only in terms of comfort and speed.

Mind you, I betcha prices vary a hell of a lot as well.

All in all though, and admitting that we own a Swedish boat (Malo) so a certain amount of bias, I'd happily recommend them to anyone. Vindo, Najad, Malo, HR .... fine boats all. Previous owner of our girl has now got into an HR 46 and he reckons the Malo is slightly better build quality. I'd still be content with any of them though you won't be taking home any club race trophies.

copacabana Hello Kitty! These are pretty uncommon boats in the US. I think you'd get a much better response posting your question on a European (or Hallberg-Rassy) forum, where you are likely to find owners of these boats. I also own a top-quality Swedish boat (a Vindö) and can say that buying a used quality boat, like a Hallberg-Rassy, is never a bad move. You'll find that these boats are easy to maintain because they are so well-built. You don't have to rebuild them as you often do with an inferior boat after 20 years of use. I know the Monsun and I've always thought that it is just about the "ideal" boat in this size range.

TheCruisingKitty I guess the aft berth is bigger on the Mk I. Is there anything else key?

Hallberg-Rassy 31 Mk1 versus Hallberg-Rassy 31 Monsun?

OK. I can see the specs for the Hallberg-Rassy 31 Mk1 show it's a bit bigger (a few inches) in all directions than the Hallberg-Rassy 31 Monsun. And the Hallberg-Rassy 31 Mk1 has the nice teak deck.

But the interior plans for these two designs on the HR website look... well, identical.

Are there any other key differences?
