Thanks--we still have Seaductress (aka "Food Acres") and are slowly restoring the boat after our cruise. This summer we repowered with a Beta 30 engine, which fits perfectly and works great. For the past several weeks (!) I have been replacing the hatch over the aft cabin...more work than I had imagined because the Lewmar I bought was not quite the same size as the original, but it's going to work out fine.

|stationr||Just saw this, so excuse delay in my response. I wouldn't worry too much about cored hulls; they are used by many of the top builders. Removing the thru-hulls and having them sealed with epoxy is good advice for any 25 year old boat, and not a particularly difficult or expensive job for a good boatyard. I suspect you're more likely to have issues with the cored deck but hey, 99.9% of boats have one of those--if that makes you feel any better!|

|chirosailor||Thanks for the reply. We purchased this boat for the sailing and layout, which is great. I am concerned about longevity because of the hull. I talked to Tiara yachts which still employs one man who was there in 1987. He said one option is to remove the thru hulls below waterline and dig out about 1/4 inch of the core around the circumference of the hole and refill with epoxy (moisture barrier). Sounds expensive. Part of me wants to sale it now and move on, but part of me says just hold on. From what I read, just like you said, cored hulls get a bad rap. I hope thats all it is.|

Check for barrier coat and through hull bedding
I have a 1987 S2 27, which is also cored below the waterline. When I bought the boat back in '08, the survey came out perfectly dry for moisture below the waterline. I think the major problem for our cored boats would be with barrier coat (or not!) and improperly bedded through hulls. My boat does have an Interlux 2000 barrier coat, topped with VC-17, and as far as I can tell, the through hulls were properly installed. Regardless, I'm not sweating it at this point with my boat.
Personally, I think cored hull boats get a bad rap...they are certainly much lighter, and way stiffer. But they DO need to be maintained properly.

We have a 1987 S2 35C. She is a GREAT boat and sails like a dream. I was wandering if anyone has heard of problems with the hull on that model. The 35 C is a cored hull below the waterline. Any suggestions? This is my only concern about this boat. Am I making a big deal out of this?
