Hi
I recently took a basic sailing class, am looking to buy a small boat (14-16ft. Dinghy?), and currently play around on a Hobie pedal kayak with a sail kit on it. Thanks for any advice or input. I'm in Oregon

I can highly recommend, a capri 14.2 (although it isn't an EASY boat to sail).. the 16.5 is good too. Holder 14, Vagabond 14.. and they should be cheap to find.

Other boats to consider, Lido 14, Omega 14, Designers Choice...

Keep in mind each of these boats will be hard to learn on, and generally tender. But they'll teach you to sail faster than many boats a lot bigger.

Thanks for the reply. I really need input. Ive actually been considering a 1973 Capri 14.2 for $1000, and looked at an early 80's (I think) Holder 14 for the same price but passed on it cuz the seller couldn't set up the mast & generally didn't know enough about it.
What exactly does "tender" mean?
Thanks for your time

Most summers, we keep our boat on Fern Ridge, just west of Eugene. Both of our kids live in the area. Keep in touch, you can come out sailing with us if you'd like. :)

A boat that is tender is one that heels (leans over) easily and changes heel angles quickly with changes in wind velocity.

Thanks for the offer. I took my basic keelboat classs on Fern Ridge thru the city's program, and live near there. I've also taken my sail-rigged kayak (don't know if you consider that "real" sailing) out on Dorena and Cottage Grove lakes. Have you sailed places other than Fern Ridge that are worth checking out?

Speaking of "tender", I had to put outriggers on my kayak so I'd quit getting slapped down by gusts.

None up in your area. Down here in southern Oregon, two or three. We alternate between Fern Ridge and Howard Prairie, down here. Howard is a beautiful mountain lake near the summit of the Cascades. Smaller than fern ridge at about a mile wide, by 6 miles long. The wind is consistent and nearly always present and the fishin' is good. ;) :D
