Re: Your favorite sailing superstitions

Geez, I recently started a 300+NM trip on Friday the 13th, with women and bananas aboard, and I stepped on board with my left foot first (old knee injury). We sailed on a boat which I had renamed!

Damn lucky to have made our home port I guess!

Wearing anything that has the word "Captain" on it. Our first extended sail, the wife bought t-shirts for us with the words, captain, first mate and crew. I wore the captain t-shirt, she wore the first mate shirt and the daughter wore the crew. Results, ran aground, wrapped the anchor line around the rudder and the engine won't start. Also I think I bled that day but bleeding isn't necessary a bad thing, it could be the mark of a good day. I never wore that shirt again and I never will. I think the sea god(s) punished me for being so presumptuous as to label myself "Captain".

You must use name brand marine products with a picture of a boat on the lable and sold only at overpriced marine stores...

Or your project it "doomed" to fail...

Re: Your favorite sailing superstitions

to get wind to grow--scratch mast and whistle. whistling on board can also bring a gale.....
dont know if this only works for boats with wood masts.....

You should cover round portlights (or deadlights) when you sleep.

Tie three knots on some line before a voyage, untie one or if need be, two, for airs to appear when becalmed. NEVER EVER untie the third knot.

Isn't it true that a Naked Women on board is good luck?

There... problem solved for all of us.

The gals just have to disrobe before stepping on board... and don't forget right foot first ladies.

This is true. Which is why I don't plan on getting any tan lines on ocean crossings. First sign of a squall, my clothes are coming off!

Re: Your favorite sailing superstitions

It's not hard to figure why a superstition developed about women on board being bad luck - can you imagine what would have happened on an old square rigger if there were a couple of women on board? There would have been constant knife fights over them.

Personally, I think believing or observing nautical superstitions brings bad luck.
