What smurphny said, PLUS parts for the Kubota engines are cheaper then most other engines (Volvo, Westerbeke, Universal). Volvo's probably have the worst reputation for hard to find and EXPENSIVE parts but all branded parts will be more $$$ then for a Kubota; so do yourself a favor and cross Volvo off your used diesel engine list.
The $7k price for a brand new Beta is what it is. There will be other costs associated with a diesel re-power job though: new fuel tank & lines, might as well re-do the hot section of the exhaust, cutless bearing and stuffing box while you are at it, and you might need a new prop and/or shaft coupling for whatever HP engine you end up with.
Use eBay and CL to hunt down used diesels in your area. I'd ask around at your local boat yards as well.
A re-power is not going to be cheap; cheaper if you can do most of it yourself though.
You might be able to get around ~$1K for an Atomic 4 in good working order on the used market.

|smurphny||I have a Yanmar 3GM30 which is a good engine, a replacement of the original Atomic gasser, but would seriously consider the Kubota conversion as mentioned here if I had to replace it. I have had Kubota engines in a few pieces of excavation machinery that took/take more abuse than a marine diesel would take in 100 years. They make as close to an "indestructible" and dependable motor as can be imagined.|

|paulafloat||Thanks for the responses. The 7hp on the Cal sounds great. I recognize that the stated 30hp of the A4 isn't quite right but it's still allot of engine for that boat, and it certainly is large. I talked to Stanley at Beta this morning, was curious about their engines. I was interested to hear that the Beta is a marine version Kubota. My impression was that 'Phasor' was their marine diesel. Anyway, at about 7k USD for the 14hp, I'm going to start looking at the reman and used engines first. And my A4 is recently rebuilt and in excellent shape so I may take advantage of those links, thanks. Nothing wrong with the engine, just my own thing about having a gasoline engine three feet away from where I'm cooking.|

Beta makes some so-called 'drop in' replacements for the A4: 16 a4 Beta Marine US Ltd. Distributors for Kubota based marine diesel engines and generators for sailboats, yachts and trawler boats.
They have models ranging from 14 - 28 HP as A4 replacements. Your choice of propeller might influence which HP engine you want/need.

|Faster||I would think pretty well any two cyl diesel would work for you.. You may find the universals are a more direct bolt-in than some of the other makes, though Beta probably can set you up nicely too.|

|Lake Superior Sailor||My Cal 28 had an A-4 with 2-1 walters reduction V-drive I replaced it with Yanmar YSM 8 which puts out 7 hp. pushes at hull speed 6-7 knots, moves good in a gale and I am very happy with mileage -1 liter per hour --Cal weighs 6000 lbs. 4.5 draft--Dale|

Engine replacement question
I've got a 30hp Atomic-4 in a Triton that I want to swap for a diesel. To me, 30hp seems like allot for this boat. Granted, it's a gas engine that doesn't have the torque of a diesel, and this has me wondering. Does anyone know what the "best" (make hull speed with least horsepower) diesel is for this boat?
I've seen one Triton that was modified with an outboard well through the lazarette (yikes!) where an 18hp Tohatsu was in use. I've no interest in cutting holes in that fine stern, but thinking maybe a 15hp diesel would be OK if an 18hp outboard worked. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.
