Minnewaska +1 for activecaptain. I originally learned about it here, specifically the interactive cruising guide. All basic info for depths, services, etc. I even have the entire database offline on my iPad, via Charts and Tides and use it often.

The written reviews are also very helpful and even inconsistent ones can be sorted out easily. The language usually reveals the bias of the writer.

The only thing I would ignore are the 1-5 scale ratings of characteristics like: holding, wakes, scenery, etc. A 5 might clearly mean the best holding, but does a 5 for wake mean big wakes or good small wakes. I think the posters use the scales inconsistently.

dacap06 I'll second Active Captain. Not only is it crowdsourcing so you get lots of opinions (one hopes most of them agree), but people are always posting so it is up to date.

mstern try activecaptain.com. Very useful. You get reviews and info from lots of people, not just the author of a guide book or site.

Peconic Bay, Long Island

Hey,

This one is very good if you are interested in Peconic Bay on Long Island.

UnlikelyVoyager That's the site run by Claiborne Young, right? I used his guides & website last year when I sailed from the west coast of Florida, and up the east coast to NY. A very good site... the only good one I know of, in fact.

travlineasy Take a look at Cruiser's Net for Virginia and south information. It's a great site for those headed down the ICW for winter.

Any useful online cruising guides?

I've been googling around for online cruising guides, but haven't been able to find anything too useful. I'm particularly interested in the Northeast US, but also the southeast coast and Caribbean.

Of course there is a ton of info on this forum, but can anyone recommend an online guide that they find themselves using frequently?

Thanks: John
