Valdare VIP is a charting company we have a boat with located in Compass point Marina on St. Thomas. Small company for sail only about 14 boats but very big in power boats. Great people, most were associated with the Moorings before coming to VIP.

Valdare First of all what are your priorities? Sailing, snorkeling, diving, relaxing, eating out? The distination are very much reliant on what you like to do.

Our first trip we ran all over the place, needed a week to recouperate when we got home. Once we had decided what we were going for the trips are much easier and we come back relaxed. As a point, we spend at least the last two days on the south side of St. John, no one ever goes there from the BVI's everyone stays on the north side, yet have found some of the best snorkeling there. My wife gets her one day of shopping in at Cruze bay and we normally sail to Buck Island for a snorkel before we return our boat to VIP at Compas point on ST. Thomas.
Are you going to prvision yourself or have the charter company provision. There are some great places to provision close to your harbor.

Anyway give me some ideas and I'll give you my thoughts. We have had our boat with VIP for five years and have yet to see 1/10th of what is in the area.

jmdelbello You can also check out this website for some other suggestions, although it was well covered by the first post.

cranki You should check out the forums at they have lengthy discussions from many regular charterers.

We chartered out of Tortola last Thanksgiving. You can't do it all in a week that's for sure. One thing to bear in mind is the big cruise ships run excursions to places like the baths, Trunk Bay, etc... Try to hit those spots on low traffic days.

camaraderie Too many options to cover in 7 days...but here's how I would plan it.
Day 1...Sail to JostVanDyke and check in with BVI customs there. Enjoy the beach and take the obligtory Foxy's for cocktails and Harris' Place or Sidneys for dinner.
Day two...get upwind sailing/motoring all the way up to North sound in Virgin Gorda. Enjoy the sound, visit the Bitter End YC and dine around the Bay at Pussers. Aside from the sheer beauty of the place...taking one day to get all the way up wind will make the rest of the weeks sailing a "breeze".
Day three...get up early and head for the "Baths" arriving early to pick up a mooring before everyone else gets there. Snorkle the caves and explore and grab lunch uphill at the "Top of the Baths" . Head to Peter Island anchorage for the evening and have a dress up dinner ashore or use the grill on the boat.
Day four- Enjoy the downwind sail to Norman Island...visit and snorkle the caves, and the Pelicans and anchor in the bay with the obligatory visit to the infamous WillyT or the beach bar for the less adventuous. Option here is to instead cross to Road Town for the evening.
Day Five...Enjoy an open water sail along the south shore of St. John and pull into one of the protected south shore bays for swimming & snorkeling. Proceed to Cruz Bay to check back into the USVI and explore the town. Day 6...Explore the north shore of St. John and relax on the beaches and in the water making your way back to the Xmas Island anchorage for your last night...Cross back to your charter base in the AM and plan how next time you're going to see all the spots you missed!
Note: It is almost impossible to anchor in most popular spots now due to the proliferation of mooring balls. Expect to fork over $30 a night for the moorings.

Other great spots include: Soper's Hole Tortola, Marina Cay Tortola, Wreck of the Rhone off Cooper, Coral Bay St. John, Green Cay off Jost, and a whole bunch of pretty bays on both St. John's and Tortola. Get the Yachtsman's Guide to the VI's and read about each but my advice would be to not try to cram too much in to one will be there when you come back again!
