advice on reinstalling a centerboard cable

We have a 1979 sabre 34. After rethreading the centerboard cable from the centerboard up through the shives x2 we are perplexed on how to terminally attach the cable to the spool. The 3/16 cable that was sent to us form Sabre does not fit into the hole in the spool, almost x2 too large. It was difficult to remove the old cable from the spool somehow they had managed to jam the cable into the hole. When we try that the cable just frays.
