Stretch isn't as big a problem with sheets as it is with halyards, particularly for a cruising boat.

We're using 3/8" Sta-Set for the heavy air jib sheets and the mainsheet. We have no complaints.

Cannot speak to Cajun ropes, as I've never bought nor used any.

It's better than sta-set. If you're not going to spring for a high-tech low-stretch line, it's the best deal I've seen out there.

I do find it a little harder to splice than sta-set, but not too bad.

I have never used Cajun Ropes, so I don't know anything about them directly. But as I understand it they use Nova Braid as a manufacturer, and they have an exallent reputation. Their prices seem to be very reasonable, and the options seem to be reasonable.

Before I did anything though, I would highly recommend you consider getting rid of double braided polyester lines (sta-set and the ilk). While polyester has been a good standby for cruisers for decades, modern lines are much stronger and much cheaper than many realize.

For most applications a modern dyneema/spectra line can actually be much cheaper than the polyester lines it might replace. My new halyards for instance cost 2/3 as much by going to tapered endurabraid as the sta-set would have cost. And have a fraction of the stretch, are thinner so they run through blocks easier, are much more uv stable, and don't absorb water.

Capt. What did ou need 5/8 for on a Cal 38? That is massive stuff for that boat. Heck you could pick up the entire boat with a piece of that line, without coming close to breaking strength. I would be concerned that none of the other hardware would be sized appropriately for something that big (blocks, sheaves, clutches, ect).

tommays All the lines have % at loads figures to make comparisons BUT they do sometimes make them hard to find

Cajun also has a much higher end line of material

All, thanks for the feedback. I may give them a try. The post that mentioned several inches of stretch caught my attention. That seemed like a bit much, so I tried to look it up. We will use 5/8 sheets, btw. Cajun claims their line to be Low Elongation as opposed to NER, which I have now, which says Low Stretch. Is there a place with more data than that?

tap Yale PhD is makes great sheets, but it's expensive. The weave starts out very loose but the heavily loaded part of the line between the sail and cars will shrink to about half diameter. The line past the winches doesn't shrink so much. The looseness can a be a problem as it can catch on things like cleats and spin pole lock levers.

Liquorice Cajun XLE is sort of like Sta-Set (not Sta-SetX) and is OK for cruising boats.

If you want very little streach you should consider Yale PhD (spectra/polyester) or FSE Robline (Dyneema/nylon).
Both are single braid, easy to splice, don't absorb water, cost a small fortune, nice hand!

Sanduskysailor Whatever you do, don't buy Novabraids Syntec for sheets. It sucks. Specs look good and supposed to be comparable to NE's VPC. It's not. Syntec is about the kinkiest line I have ever used. I tried everything to keep it from getting hockles. Pre-stetching, trailing the line behind the boat, washing with some mild detergent and fabric softener. Nothing works. It still has tension in it and fouls in the turning blocks on just about every tack. Line was very slippery at first and still pretty slippery. My guess is the tension in the core is not balanced with the cover. On the other hand I've heard good things about XLE for general use. Unfortunately with my Kevlar #1 XLE has too much stretch. 7/16" XLE stretches 4-8 inches in the puffs which is not acceptable in racing conditions.
