JayKay Thanks for all the info...our group is trying to get to either Banaba and we are now considering an alternate island....looking to return to Kanton if that is possible.

According to Kiribati, prevailing winds in the area are northeasterly from April to October, but westerly the rest of the year. So in principle if a boat was willing to pick them up from Nauru during the westerlies, it could continue on to Kiribati afterwards.

JayKay Killarney et al

Is there a forum for large power boats in Nauru or an island nearby?

JayKay Thanks so much for the reply and the information. Its very difficult to get to Banaba in general though a ferry runs a couple of times a year out of Tararwa. Only problem it leaves the next day...which would leave our team stranded....and that is not in the plan!!

Maybe someone in the future will see this thread and know of some folks who ciould help out.

killarney_sailor Good luck. Nauru is not a common destination for people heading through the South Pacific since it is a very unattractive island because of the mining and the anchorage is not very good there. Also you need a pretty big boat to be able to accomodate 6 or 8 guests and their gear. A final thought, going to Banaba is pretty much exactly to windward, so even though it is not so far in terms of distance it would be a fairly rugged trip. Sounds like you might need a good-sized powerboat for this.

Nauru to Banaba Island

Hi all

A group of amateur radio operators (6-8) are looking for a boat to "jump on" in Nauru and go the 180 miles to Banaba Island. Our team will remain on Banaba for about 12-14 days. After our efforts on Banaba, we need the boat to take us back to Nauru. Anytime between September and December 2012 would be fine. Hotels in Nauru indicate that no boats in Nauru can make the trip. Our team would fly into Nauru thru Fiji .. staging out of Los Angeles.

So if anyone is passing thru that area and would be interested in helping out, please contact me.

I hope this subject matter is proper for this forum....otherwise please delete.

Thanks in advance
