Anyone care to identify? Could it be the piece of gear that ends the furler vs hanked-on debate once and for all???MedSailor
It appears to be a Mariner furler which does indeed use hanked on sails. I have one on my boat. It was built in SoCal and is no longer in business.

He mentions in the video that the roller furling is "un-operable". Must be that for some reason he no longer uses the furling sail and has replaced it with a hank on sail, leaving the furling drum intact. He also mentions that the furling line is falling off the boat and trailing in the water. Might be time to make things a little more ship shape.
It would be odd (and difficult to do) to take the foil off the stay and leave the drum intact. And why would you....

Do you think it was ever operable with hank on sails? I notice that the tack of the sail is attached to the furling drum.

Video: A hank-on headsail furler?

Sailing trip from Charleston to St Thomas - YouTube

Check out the video of a big beast of a boat attempting to sail from Charleson SC to St. Thomas. A good enough video on it's own, with good narrative, good camera work, and well, they're out there doing it.
