sailingdog It would help if you said what size and pitch prop you're currently using, as well as what the displacement of the boat is. The number of blades on the prop will affect the situation a bit...but not much.

hamiam best bet is to call or email a dealer of your outboard or the manufacturer, explain your situation and suggest a fix.

Mercury Outboard 4HP - Recommend Replacement Prop?

Hi All,

I don't know much about outboards and need your help. I have a 21' Venture sailboat w/ a 4HP mercury outboard (2 stroke). I am looking to get more thrust out of the current engine while motoring in/out. The motor was recently tuned and water impeller/seals replaced. Is there a prop size and/or configuration that will yield a higher thrust? What pitch angle is best? Three or four blades?
Thanks for your help!
