Mine's manual with ropes, so I have no idea on hydraulic fluid. I know there was a lively discussion about you question within the last few weeks on the C&C email discussion group. As for where the shrouds connect to the deck with the backstay, i would ask a rigger or southshore yachts for the proper tension.

Thanks. The part I am having problems with is not the hydraulic backstay, but the adjustable shrouds/stays. Sorry about the poor description.
On the backstay, any idea how hard it is to add hydraulic fluid?

for gusts of wind or sudden wind velocity increases, the backstay adjuster can be used to quickly and efficiently depower the mainsail without letting out the mainsheet. I have found it to be very helpful on numerous occasions while cruising (i dont race my boat, just other people's boats).
The cars for the running backstay are broken (The eye is there, the other part is a hole with orange plastic from where a fitting broke) and the PO just tied off the stays. What is the right way to set these up? How essential are these for cruising and the occosional race?
