Re: Guns on boats...

Waaaaaaiiiiiit just a minute.

This gun totin' guy wants to know what this is doing in the general sailing forum. It shouldn't be here, as it has nothing to do with sailing. According to the OP, who asked "Why do people seem so drawn to this topic? Why are they compelled to choose a side and then participate in the back and forth?"

This should be in the off topic section.

Re: Guns on boats...

There are many heated issues that would invoke the same polarizing reaction among any random group of strangers: abortion, free health care, unions, etc.

Most can ignore the bait. But most of these topics can't be easily woven into the topic we are here to talk about as easily as guns can.

Is it legal to have a gun on a boat is a legit question, but invokes the standalone emotional gun argument. I haven't heard anyone ask whether it is legal to have an abortion on a boat or whether there should be a union for recreational boaters. Give one a try to see what I mean.

They only tend to cause arguments on US-centric forums. The rest of the world generally doesn't care as they often don't have the gun as a central part of their national identity.

Re: Guns on boats...

People are also very opinionated about the subject.

People like me. I grew up with guns. I own guns now. I carry a gun. I live in a state that is very gun friendly with Castle Laws that allow us to protect ourselves and property. It is my right to do so.

There is no argument whatsoever from any anti-gun camp that will ever change my mind.

So, I typically stay out of any "gun" thread and wont even attempt to get in a pissing match with someone. There's just no point to it, for me personally. It won't change anything.

Just be aware of the local laws concerning weapons. Don't be stupid and think that just because you're a US Citizen with certain rights, that those rights carry over to another society.

Re: Guns on boats...

It's just one of a few subjects that people feel VERY strongly about. Let's see....guns, abortion, religion.

On the "important" issues, it seems that most people simply cannot stand the fact that there are people with beliefs that are contrary to their own. Good 'ol intolerance.

I know that I have an immediate negative reaction when someone opposes my views, but I just take a step back and realize I'm not going to change their mind, so I forget it and move on. I've pretty well figured out that at least half the world has a view 180 degrees away from my own, and I simply don't have the time to kill them all.

So, disagree with me on the big stuff and I'll ignore you. BUT...try to impose your views on me and we have a BIG problem.

Re: Guns on boats...

The question wasn't whether or not to have one, it was why does the debate get so heated and black & white so quickly.
