Essentially, although I believe it is a relatively few that keep it from being a great site. The sheer volume of posts makes for a lot of information that is not available elsewhere. But the banter can get out of hand and often become mean spirited at times. Otherwise it is a good site. But now this is getting off topic, as it was originally supposed to be how to get rid of the annoying chat bar if you don't want to participate in it. I only pointed out one of the side benefits of the mentioned fixes.

I think the issue is, at least for me, on how somehow the scripts used here render the site much slower then other forum sites, both sailing and non-sailing related.

A perfect example is how the main page loads, and then bounce around when the top header flash ad appears. None of the other forum sites, using the same Vbulletin software, are set up that way.

One can clear the cache, and things work reasonably well, with the above exception, but as soon as one opens another tab, one is back to the slow loading.

Something is an issue, and although I suspect one of the scripts, I am not techie enough to dig far into which one and why.

All I know is that this is the most frustrating of sites from a technical point of view. Usually Chrome and Ubuntu render sites faster then Windoze.

Re: Permanently disabling chat

I'm curious, since I'm not experiencing those difficulties, even though I'm on wifi and not using adblockers. I've gone to reputable news sites and picked up the Win7 anti-virus trojan, more than once. I've yet to pick up any malware from this site.

Well given how often this site gets blacklisted on Google from the ads on it trying to install malware and how most of the errors I have gotten on the site are directly related to the ads. I would not bother, but as I said they make the site basically unusable, so without ad bock I figure the site does not exist anyway. There are plenty of other sites that have no ads.

Re: Permanently disabling chat

It's not so much of a hassle for me (as Faster said, only a few clicks to turn off), but sometimes I don't notice that I'm logged into it for awhile and based on another thread about this I guess that clogs it up for those that are using it.
