I just purchased a North Sails 140% Genoa for my Roller Furling system and when making the order I was asked how many reef points I wanted, I said NONE! Bringing down the Genoa and hauling up the Jib is definately a better play on my book when the wind picks up! Well, that's my two cents =D

I own and race a C&C 29 mkII (this is my thirteenth season with the boat.) The boat has a narrow waterline beam which will initially heel when hit with a puff but it stiffens up quickly when it approaches 15 degrees of heel. The boat will sail fast with slightly more heal than some other boats because of the narrow waterline beam. You'll hit your target numbers upwind with the boat heeling 25-27 degrees. Some people confuse low form stability with tenderness. The boat does need good sail inventory, a responsive crew and weight on the rail when sailing upwind in the conditions you describe. That pretty much describes all boats if you're looking for maximum performance. Try to flatten the main as much as possible by bending the mast using an adjustable backstay in conjunction with a baby stay adjuster. Flatten the foot with the outhaul or flattening reef if your sail is equipped with one. The baby stay on some C&C 29mkII's came with a 4:1 purchase adjuster. This amount of purchase is not nearly enough power to induce bend in the mast. It's fine for preventing the mast from pumping. I would suggest increasing the baby stay purchase power to 6:1 or 8:1. You should be able to flatten the main by putting 1.5" of bend in it. Move your genoa leads aft to twist the headsail and get more drive in the lumpy conditions you are probably sailing in when the wind is up. It's a masthead boat and most of the drive comes from the headsail. Reef the main before you reduce the size of the headsail or you'll lose forward drive/power when you need it most. The C&C 29 mkII is a solid, excellent performing boat and can easily handle the windy conditions you experienced. You just have to set the boat up for them.

There is a lot of misinformation here. The 29-II is not necessarily a tender boat. You have to have the proper rig set up and sail inventory. In the conditions you described I would have my 138% headsail up with a totally flattened main, full on babystay and 3/4 full on backstay. Additionally I would have the vang on full (8:1) and a crew on windward cockpit coaming playing the main traveler in the puffs. The boat will easily feather off in any extreme puffs.

There are a lot of other things that go into making the boat go. Things like low stretch sails, low stretch halyards, proper traveler set-up, powerful main sheet tackle, proper halyard settings, right rig tensions and mast rake, etc. Good luck on setting your boat up.

I race mine often in those conditions you describe in the spring. You just need the right sails and set-ups.

Pretty tough to sit here and 'see' what you did that may have been 'wrong'.. the questions above are good ones.

If indeed you're trying to beat with a partially rolled up jib that may be a big part of the problem.

We need pictures and video!!! HD, of course!

You bought a tender boat so get used to'll be better in lighter winds. Just to cover the subject, you cannot race with a furled jib, you need to change 100-150 up or down as needed, having a 130 in the middle is nice.

What are your sails like? In gusty conditions you need to be able to flatten them out to reduce heeling. If they are tired they may have stretched out.

Also did you outhaul your main, put lots of vang on and drop your traveller down until you reduced your heel?

It takes time to sort things out.

Do you have hank-on or a roller-furling headsail? The latter furled will not point well.

You should get better speeds than that on a close reach; 6.3 is the theoretical hull speed.

I did find the 29 to be quite tender.

Did the main get really flat when you reefed?

How many crew / rail meat did you have?

Racing a C&C 29 MKII

My God I need some help. First race with this 1983 C&C and I was embarrassed. It seems that all the qualities of the boat that I enjoyed, high point, good off wind, went away. 15-20, gusting to 25 all day. I reefed everything that I could not to be overpowered. It wouldn't point though I would be getting 4.5-4.7 speeds at 50-60 degrees off wind. Anybody out there who has experience with this boat that might give me some help?
