Re: Current tables

P.11 of the 2012 Eldridge covers the "old data" issue. Last year, I noticed that The Race current predictions were accurate but inside Fishers and into LI Sound, the current did not coincide even roughly to predictions. It's a fairly significant issue if currents are not at least NEAR predictions. When your boat only goes 6 knots, bucking a strong current that is not supposed to be running against you for two hours, makes a big difference. There are so many lobster traps in this stretch of water that it is very easy to see exactly when the current ebbs and compare to the tables. I'm pretty careful about running with currents and this is the only area I have ever noticed a big difference.

Re: Current tables

NOAA may have more data points then Eldridge but it is important to keep in mind that they are only PREDICTIONS based on astronomical data. The predictions will not reflect the influence a strong, persistent easterly blow might impart. Eldridge actually points this out if you read the text that is in there.
Eldridge also does not require batteries or a laptop.

Re: Current tables

Eldridge has made note in the 2012 edition, of the sometimes inaccurate data gleaned from NOAA times . It seems that a lot of the NOAA times are quite inaccurate because they have not been updated in many years. I experienced a great discrepancy last summer in current predictions around Fisher's Island, The Race, and Plum Gut. Heading west out of Fishers, the difference was close to 2 hours. These are tough areas to predict but with this much discrepancy, it is impossible to calculate navigation accurately.

Re: Current tables

NOAA web site is better than Eldridges. Much more data points. I print out the tables for where I'm going before I leave.

Current tables

Eldridge's is a must.

Re: Current tables

Most East Coast sailors use Eldridge's for tides and current tables in a convenient format.

Those are the absolute best. Beats the heck out of trying to use tide tables and adjust for cyclic phase differences.

The link you posted is for year 2010. 2012 is here: Tidal Current Tables
