I guess I might as well get this one started.

As mentioned in another thread we're going to try to have monthly raft ups on the Bay. All are welcome. Locations will be announced later but will probably start in March. Last summer when we had one each boat brought an appetizer to contribute and that seemed to work out well.

Hopefully we can also look forward to the annual Sailnet Rendezvous in June.

Let's go sailing!

OK Ladies and Gents: It's Time!

I went through this thread and tried to find where people volunteered. Here are the raft up weekends for the rest of the year:

April 28/29-
May 26/27-
June 9/10 3rd annual Sailnet Rondevous at the Maryland Yacht Club
July 28/29- Jaye (WingnWing) and Dan
August 25/26-
September 29/30-
October 27/28
November 20/21-

Dave (chef2sail) mentioned that October was taken, but I can't find who wants it. Step forward, please!

There is not an end of June raft up due to the rendezvous, but if anyone wants to still plan one, feel free.

I don't think we should stress about finding a "captain" for every weekend. We had a successful impromptu raft up last year (which is what spawned this). Please look back through the thread because there were some good ideas for locations.

John and I will be in the BVIs in April, but anyone is welcome to raft up there with us!

Bubblehead...you had an excellent idea about the raft up in Rhode River near you. Are you willing to organize that on one of the dates Donna has posted above.

Donna how about you are you and John picking one of the dates?

While it isnt necessary to pick a "captain" it may help if someone will step forward as Donna has said to take the lead and somewhat loosely organize it. Other wise we become that perverbialy herd of cats which are impossible to decide on one direction.

Like Donna said...
Step forward, please!
My wife Donna and I will take the October date and invite all to join us at Cackaway Island up Lanford Creek on the Chester for a "water meeting", rafting up is optional. We go their every year to marvel at the "Goose Landing Circus". We have been entertained every year by the 100s of geese landing wave after wave in the less than perfect "V" landing next to our boat and laughed our asses off as they dazzel us with their squacking and rough water landings...sometimes taking out the rest of the "V" NOthing better than Langford in the early fall for beauty, (Although last year we did this at both Corsica and an unamed Creek in the Wye) because the winds were howling that weekend at 25-35+ and thats where we could find the best protection.

Not to worry. This chef likes burgers and dogs as does T37chef. The get together is not about food...its about commradierie and meeting people and story telling and laughing and.....

Thank you for just being willing to find us a safe place to anchor and hang out (sans permit) . Even if we cant do the land thing it will be all good. Just direct us to the best spot for all of us to drop our hooks.

Absolutely, Rich, thanks for stepping up.

Camaraderie, meeting folks, blah blah, all good. But...food is good, too. :)

Have dinghy, will party!

Not yet. Interested in hosting? :)

Our first, if everything works according to plan, will more than likely be the rendezvous in June.

I would be happy to see if we can't pull something together. I'm at Spring Cove in Solomons which has a wonderful area for gathering. There is an area for anchoring near the mooring field but I am unsure of how crowded the area will be come late May. Maybe gunkholing somewhere might be a good idea?

Thoughts?

Spring Cove is one of my favorite marinas on the bay, the picnic area is well suited for a land based get together. If a raft up is decided, what about something up St Leonard Creek, gorgeous area!

The original plan was to raft up once a month (at least that was my intention when suggesting it), not stay at marinas necessarily. I think since the MYC get-together became the June activity, there is the assumption that we have to stay at a marina each month. Not so.

Suggestions of good spots to anchor and raft would be just fine. Those who don't want to raft with other boats can anchor independently and dinghy to the raft for munchies and socializing. We do that in my Catalina club and it works just fine. If there are a lot of boats we organize rafts of four or five boats each and designate one of the rafts (usually the one with the largest boats) as the food raft.

This all started when four or five of us had an impromptu raft up last summer, had a great time and decided to do it monthly this season and open it up to Sailnet. Each boat brought an appetizer contribution and a good time was had by all.

**And "hosting" simply means that you choose the anchorage (or marina if that's what you'd prefer but, again, the original intent was raft ups).

Donna, I believe that was YOUR original intent. Some of us have presented differing ideas. I think a combo of both would be great.

Donna, I am somewhat curious as to why you have not volunteered to host a date yet being as you were so gung ho about this. Since you believe in a raft up, pick a date and get us together. We certainly will come to a raft up

Actually we have been having impromptu get together long before you suggested this so it really was not a new idea thus the 4th Annual Sailnet Rendezvous at the MYC every June, but your thoughts in this certainly have added to the group.

Any way to get Sailnetters together is really a great thing thing. If you look back though the blog you will see a number of us have volunteered to "captain" a get together whether a raft up or a land/ raft up adventure. The nice thing about the land and raft up adventure is that those who can't get there or don't have multiple days can come by car also. (I Think Bubblehead, Wingnwing, us again (Chef2sail) have all proposed to host/ captain dates already. Some are raft ups and some are combos. I think it great Adams has stepped forward especially since it involves our southern areas. I want o get together with Sabreman and his wife again so hopefully they would come, and there are plenty of members on here like zzgat who can't make it this far north who I would like to meet.

Adams- Thank you for coming forward and being willing to plan this. We certainly would come to Spring Cove, but by car as it is a 75 miles sail for us and we can't do it easily on a weekend by sail but would drive down to meet people.. I am sure if you host this some of other "brother and sister" sailnetters from the southern Chesapeake would be able to come also. Like T37chef we love Spring Cove and have been there a number of times. Perfect place for a get together and the boats that come could either anchor or take slips. Solomon's holds a very special place in my heart as I remember stopping there many times as a child in sailing adventures.

This isn't meant to stir up controversy, but either way you decide to do it Adams...would be great. If it's St Leneords (an awesome place to anchorage) we won't be able to get there and back comfortably unless we have three days. If it's Spring Cove...we are in by car. Just don't have a raft up in the creek where the fish factory is (I forget its name) it's terrible there.

Dave, you bring up a good point, the occasional land based event would be a good change up and we know Spring Cove would be a great place to meet on land. Since we don't have a boat this year we would also be coming by car and probably would make a weekend of it in Solomons. The kids love the Calvert Museum and the ever entertaining river otters! :)

Its your call Adams3287! :)

Keep in mind that if we're still talking about the last weekend in May that it's Memorial Day weekend so that might give some people more time to make the trip down.

That said, for us 75 miles each way by water would probably be beyond our range even for a three day weekend unless weather and wind conditions were expected to be absolutely ideal for the whole weekend. And we'd have to respectfully decline coming to Spring Cove by land as it's a weekend we'd really prefer to spend on the water if possible.

Another option here would be to have simultaneous southern and northern bay raft-ups - though I certainly wouldn't want to steal any thunder from adams if it turns out having dual events would create competition for attendees.

Oh, my, this is getting complicated!

Adams,

Just as a side, would love to see your Islander 32. My first keelboat was an Islander 28 ( Island Majic) and I still have fond memories about that boat. So rare to see them here on the Chessie. There are a few I36 up our way. When my wife and I went to San Diego and Catalina Island last December we saw lots of them in Southern California Marinas (they were built out there ) of all differing shapes and sizes including some of the large pilothouses.

Hung out at the club last night. Lots of members finally back in the water. We are planning on just sailing in the Patapsco and near Bay today as front and T storms forecasted later today and coastal noreeaster with 2 inches of rain for tomorrow.

It's great to be back on the water

I went out for an evening sail last night - beautiful night! Then we went out again this morning - beautiful again! Dave, we saw Haleakula in Old Road Bay as we were heading in.

The decks are filthy and I still have a few winter projects to finish up but I decided I needed to sail her to get motivated to finish the jobs.

Bryan,

We though we saw you guys, Spindrift. we were testing our autopilot out so we went over without sails. Once I was sure it was calibrated with the chart plotter we decided to sail with a furled jib. Winds were 15 to 25 in the river mouth/ bay entrance. We trucked over to Tollchester in about 11/2 hours doing 6+ with the. 150 furled to a 135. Main staved on the boom the entire day. Was a delightful sail back to Rock Creek docking with 20 knots behind you is always a moment to pause, but Donna handled it beautifully.

We had a pig out night and decided save our grilling for tomorrow and went to 5 Guys for a bucket of grease. But soooo good.

We are tied safely in our slip ricking and rolling with steady 15 knots with gusts to 35 as the front is going through and the northeaster winds up tonight. Meeting a new couple from SailNet tomorrow as they want to go over plans for their trip to theLISound for month in July. we may run into them coming back as we are heading up there.

Hi Chef, it was a nice day to sail today! Today instead of merely spilling wind we tried reefing for the first time. WHAT A REVALATION! We should have been doing this all along when it got gusty! Our little boat did great out in the bay this morning. it was like a whole different boat. I didn't want to come back in but I promised to knock some things off the Honey Do list before we go to Eleuthera. We were heading in to take care of business when we passed each other at the bouys.
